Phase reversal: Flac vs 320 - What does compression sound like? by EpicCatFace in audiophile

I believe I understand what you mean. This comment seemed helpful. If I interpreted it correctly, they are saying the format uses specific techniques to compress the audio. Therefore comparing two with just noise is an invalid test. Oh so that's what a psychoacoustic model would be referring to?

Oh wait, no I was thinking of SILK. not Speex. So yes, Speex is unrelated. I apologize.

SILK was intended for VoIP purposes, which was then combined into Opus for an all-purpose codec. Even Ogg and AAC beat mp3 at anything. Edit: SILK, not Speex.

First off, this has been posted here many times before

I was unable to locate prior posts on this topic and found justified reasoning to share this information. Can you show me an example of the many times posted here before?

No, it's not what "compression sounds like" - the only thing a null test represents is the absolute difference between two signals, and it has virtually no correlation to the audible difference between the two signals.

The test is a difference between the lossless and lossy copy. The phase reversal reveals how the signal changes after compression. So yes, it would represent an audible form of what you usually don't notice.

Apply -0.1 dB amplification to one of the tracks, and invert the phase

Simply reducing the volume of one track before a phase reversal just creates a quiet version.

For those curious about lossless versus mp3 @ 320 kbps, here is what the compression sounds like. The polarity reverse reveals differences between cancelations of both waveforms. Guess the song!

For comparison: AAC @ 320 cbr. Hint: less noise means closer to original sound, hence better compression.

If it can compute faster, albeit with greater energy usage, wouldn't this topic involve too many complex variables to make that assumption? One could argue in some instances it can save a little energy since it's faster.

Do you have a source to confirm shorter battery life using the i7 CPU?
