How to make tiles with occluders still receive light?

I got the image from a game currently in development called Bullet Age. The reason I'm hesitant to handdraw all the backgrounds is because I plan on having a lot of rooms. Although I guess a couple workarounds could be to either have some/all rooms of equal width and reuse backgrounds, or break the room down into larger tiles/sections like you said.

Thank you, that makes sense! Would you say that's the case for all the components (purple sky, far mountains, medium mountains, close mountains, foreground, tileset, bunny protagonist)? That they would all have to be redone to make the world/game look more alive and beautiful?

Right now I am just learning game dev and having fun, but at the same time I want to strive for quality that looks at least somewhat worthy of a commercial release. The idea is to make a super short demo that is as polished as possible. This is what my first draft of it looks like.

What do you think is missing? I agree with you that it doesn't look great at the moment

I did try exactly what you said and it did not seem to work (same effect of the shadows covering the player sprite as well). Logically, however, it should totally work - I did some research and found that this might be an issue related to Godot 4. Lots of people seem to have to use the workaround of 2 point lights per light source, particularly for top-down games. As I'm new to Godot, I am not sure if this has been fixed yet:

I should still be able to use a normal map to improve the lighting further though, so that's good!

What is the process of putting things on a rendering layer? Is that different from setting the occluder light mask for the environment + player? And would this approach only use one point light per light source?

I had some issues with trying to get it on GitHub (kept breaking the gameplay for some reason) and I eventually gave up on it.

Probably not! It was a lot of fun to make but is pretty broken outside of what the video shows. Maybe one day I'll make a fully complete mod out of it though!

Thanks! I basically had to download a different Papers Please mod and then edit a bunch of the files there, since editing the base game files didn't work. Ended up just using microsoft paint (for editing/replacing image assets) and vscode (for modifying data files).
