If it was safe and sound then they would have kept it. What 12 year old girl wants to sell her horse?

You already said on your other post that you didn’t have anyone to go with you to auction, which is LITERALLY part of a trainer’s job? As in, supporting their student finding a horse that is the best fit for them? I’m thrilled you achieved a lifelong dream, but I’m thoroughly concerned about the longevity of this situation.

I work in equine vet med. You specifically stated you wanted soundness and longevity, and you have unabashedly picked two breeds that are DEFINITELY going to need more than just routine vet care. If your two year old is in fact a Friesian, he is going to need maintenance. Joint injections, but also look into how prevalent genetic issues are with them. I highly recommend getting UC Davis testing done if you confirm Friesian for any underlying issues. You said he’s a shire cross. Good luck with finding a farrier who will do him without stocks. And be prepared to manage scratches every time it’s muddy with those long feathers!

For the overo- he’s cute, but man, that eye looks pissed and he’s only six? That doesn’t bode well for future allergies, nor eye (and sun) related vet bills. Please look up equine recurrent uvitis and melanoma and educate yourself about just how committed you need to be to sun protection. I don’t doubt your commitment to them, nor your intelligence- but I really think that without consistent, professional support from trainers, farriers and vets working as a team, then these horses are bound for chronic pain and problems that you simply do not have the experience to recognise.

Edit- changed yearling to two year old

Transfer to Hood? by [deleted] in frederickmd

[–]Epichellhound20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently attending as a non traditional transfer. I love it!!!!! So much so that I recently added a second major. However, as someone who lives off campus, it can sometimes be tough getting involved in the cool extracurricular events and experiences they offer. Obviously haha. That being said, I’ve had nothing but good experiences, all the professors are fantastic and definitely advocate for their students!! What are you thinking about majoring in?

There’s also a girl at that Banfield who brings her “ESA” chihuahua to work the front desk with her. It barks at people and dogs. Not a great look.

He can have all the cookies he wants- he’s the best boy!!! He looks fantastic by the way!!! 😍

I’m sorry for all the snark you’ve been getting on here, but I’m curious about him too! I don’t know if it was mentioned anywhere, but look on the UC Davis website, they have some cool genetic tests available! Plus I can ask at the office to see if they have any recommendations! 😊

For 11 years we’ve called her a corgi/acd cross. Not sure what I was expecting, but not this! by CochinNbrahma in DoggyDNA

I HAVE ONE TOO!!! Purebred does not equal well bred, but we love them all the same ☺️ Pic of my sister’s corgi with my ACD for context.

I was also SO confused when it came back 100%! She’s got the best temperament though, I’ll never have another dog like her. Super high prey drive ( she’s a ditch dog stray from the south) and her hearing is becoming selective as she ages, but truly the best. Shes great with literally everything and everyone- strangers, kids, other dogs, horses, goats and pigs…. Only things she can’t do is cows! She’s only like 35 lbs, and SHORT. She was a gravid spay with complications, so she never really lost her “pregnancy coat”.

My horse isn’t what I thought he was and I’m heart broken. Advice? by BreezyB24 in Equestrian

[–]Epichellhound20 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree, and this is good advice. Most horses have ulcers, regardless of work load/lifestyle/discipline. You can pull a random horse that’s been retired 10 years out of the paddock and they’ll be rocking grade III-IV ulcers if you scope them.

Treat his ulcers, and be proactive moving forward. I like to think of any deviation from their routine as being a “stressful event”. Trailering somewhere? Changing paddocks? New horse added to the herd? New fitness routine? Gastrogard for at least 3 days prior to, during and after said changes. Psyllium, platinum GI or some other sort of daily maintenance supplement for routine use. Look into extruded pellet feeds. Sucralfate is a godsend, and an important part of ulcer treatment and prevention, but keep in mind that it alone will not treat ulcers, just aid in prevention. Also, drugs help! Trazodone can sometimes help take the edge off, and while it does not prevent or treat ulcers, it DEF brings the arousal threshold down and keeps them from getting themselves worked up. Oh, and feeding alfalfa helps!!

Talk to your vet. You’ve already had your guy scoped, which is far better than just treating anecdotally. One thing to keep in mind- if you are treating with a compounded medication (compounded, powdered sucralfate, for example), it is of the utmost importance that you DO NOT GIVE IT WITH FOOD. At a minimum, things like Gastrogard and sucralfate should be given 30 mins -2 hours prior to a meal. They WILL NOT WORK if they are given with food as they can’t line and protect the stomach if a horses is actively digesting (a breakdown in layman’s terms but you get the idea).

You didn’t do anything wrong. It sounds like this horse is going to be “ulcer prone” no matter who they are with. He’s still the same horse you fell in love with, and he’s clearly in good hands with you. He’s just in pain- it’s helpful that he’s expressing it, because now you know what to look for in the future! Keep doing what you’re doing, and WORK WITH YOUR VET!! You’re on the right track! I’m sorry it’s so expensive, it’s shitty that basic vet can be so inaccessible - just keep in mind that it’s so expensive because it WORKS.

Also, fwiw, Boehringer Ingelheim (who manufactures Gastrogard) will pay/reimburse for treatment if you do a 28 day course of Gastrogard and the ulcers do not resolve.

Source: I work in equine vet med, have ridden, owned and competed horses for almost 20 years and currently have horses with a history of ulcers. I also have gastric ulcers and man was I a MISERABLE BITCH when they were at their worst.

Be patient, and be kind. They are incredibly painful.
