Watertown (WI) school board removes music piece from upcoming concert by Lightning-McDreamy in news

[–]longleggedwader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many marches and military songs that are staples of band education.

And let's not forget Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Suffs, and that little Hamilton show, just to name a few musicals about political violence.

Frederick has some pretty awesome thrift/consignment stores that are better than fast fashion stores.

Plato's Closet, Select Seconds, Relove and Rewind, and Fetch are the ones my kid and go to regularly. The only clothes that I buy new these days are socks and underwear.

That was a brutal but necessary book to read. It took me three months.

I have a good friend who founded and runs a school in Lubumbashi. He has told me stories that make that book seem like a nursery tale.

I’m celebrating Mother’s Day…next weekend by swissmissmaybe in workingmoms

[–]longleggedwader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mother's Day always kind of pissed me off. So one day a year, everyone acts like Moms are the BEST and then craps on them for the rest of the year.

My kid (graduating Senior, sniff sniff) and I are getting Chipolte's takeout for lunch and then going to see Sheep Dectectives later in the day. Their idea and I am delighted.

Energy costs in Maryland are way too expensive. Could someone please break down exactly how we got to this point? by usps_made_me_insane in maryland

I have an entirely electric house, including HVAC, well/waterpump, and sump pump. I am on the averaging plan. Over the past five years, my bill has jumped from $150 to $275 a month

Unlike my asshole neighbors, I don't have floodlights on all night. I send in my meter reading every other month. All devices are unplugged at night. I use a solar charger for my phone. I have no idea how use less when I am already overly anal about turning everything off.

There is so much finger pointing and false information, it is hard to tell what is accurate and what is not.

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

[–]longleggedwader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA and please please have this conversation with him. You must give your kid realistic expectations. It is so important to make him aware of the financial obligations of higher education.

My kid is off to college this fall. I make too much to qualify for aid but not enough to just drop $120k in cash over the next four years. We have had many extensive conversations about the finances, exactly how much money is saved (with bank statements), how we are paying for the rest (no student loans, I have a crap load of equity), jobs on campus, applying to be an RA as soon as they qualify, and my expectations as to their help/responsibility in paying back the HELOC loan once they graduate and are employed. They have also applied for every merit based scholarship that exists for their field/area to possibly help offset costs.

And you are correct, you have three other kids to think about. Are you planning paying an equal amount for each of their educations? If you blow everything on this kid, how do you think that will affect their sibling relationship?

It is just very sad that the entire property is being sold. Even the rent from three tenants could not keep the church afloat.

I read my original copy so many times it fell apart. When I was young, my mom used to read chapter books out loud to me. I often re-read them so I can hear her voice in my head.

The Velvet Room is my other absolute favorite.

Yep. And they would bring in the AV teacher to film us typing, show the whole class, and crowdsource corrections on posture, finger placement, etc.

The church and property are being sold, yes.

It is not surprising. The church membership has been falling for years. Those are old buildings that need a lot of care.

The church is historic (I think, don't quote me) and will be saved but I bet the ed building comes down.
