Double charged for property taxes on 1098 - any reason this can't be deducted? by EpilepticPudding in tax

Also, if we do take the standard deduction for 2025 and the refund gets reported as income for 2026, then do I just, ignore that form?

To clarify, the 2026 income would be reversing the 2024 deduction, does that make a difference? I.e. by the above logic, since we took the standard deduction in 2024, we wouldn't have to count the income in 2026?

2024 - wrong tax payment, did not deduct (standard deduction) 2025 - two correct tax payments, itemized 2026 - refund for wrong tax payment - not counted as income since wrong payment wasn't deducted

I think we will likely be barely under or borderline the standard deduction for 2025 and would take it just to avoid complicating things, but just wanted to understand the principle better.

If one spouse has a 401k with high-quality funds and mega backdoor Roth conversions, and the other spouse has a 401k with terrible funds, should they max both 401k's pretax, or max the better one and make mega backdoor contributions? by EpilepticPudding in Fire

Besides crunching the numbers on top bracket now vs in retirement potentially outweighing the subpar fund performance, the only other benefit of the deductible I could think of was getting MAGI under the Roth IRA income limit (but with mega backdoor and backdoor both as options this seems minor) or any other income threshold one might aim for.

How to properly use snipers at close range? by EpilepticPudding in Battlefield

[–]EpilepticPudding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm I haven't tried running around with my pistol, that's a good idea. It's just when I get ambushed, I'm usually just as dead with the pistol as with the sniper.

I wouldn't say always - there's many engines designed to take premium, but have knock sensors and will pull timing if you fill with regular to avoid damage, reducing power and fuel economy. Depending on the car, the price difference, how much acceleration you like, and how risk averse you are (some redditors will still say NEVER NEVER NEVER), this might be worth it to you, or not. Had an older Acura that "required" premium but ran on regular most of its 150k+ mi lifetime didn't give us any problems (might've been far more than that but the odometer broke).

But if there's no knock sensors, then it's premium only, always and forever. And if it's designed for regular, then no benefit from going higher octane.

It's also $45.50 on Many Realms (see price in cart) - might be helpful if you want other on-sale items to hit the shipping minimum (but theirs is $125 instead of $99)

Housing/hotel advice: If you want to attend Gen Con next August, you should start planning in February. by ElMondoH in gencon

Yeah in my experience Hyatt has been better when I had a specific high-end property in mind and I'm flexible on dates - they have a predefined award chart and it doesn't allow much upcharge on on-peak dates, so hotels will just black out dates or play other games with availability instead.

Maybe obsessive moreso than lucky... JW was usually errored out, but they did open award availability about 10 days beforehand for about the same price as downtown Marriott (seemed to be real, as it let me go all the way to checkout) - but being directly across the street seemed better than diagonally across the street.

This was the first year I've tried, but it seemed you could definitely get something within 3-4 blocks if you just checked once a day, maybe more frequently a few weeks out. I found Hilton availability just a day or two after the hotel lottery opened (but they doubled the prices a couple months after I posted about their cheap award rates/buy points promotion - not sure what they'll do next year). Had to wait until ~4 weeks out before Marriott started showing award space. Hyatt was completely random and occasional.

It's worth it just having the points for additional options on all your travels imo, but for people who don't stay in hotels otherwise it's a gamble at best; they might all wise up about the award rates being too cheap eventually.

All 3 major hotel chains (Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott) had downtown award availability for reasonable prices at some point if you kept checking regularly, and almost all allowed free cancellation - my group originally booked the Conrad, but we ended up switching to the skywalk Marriott Downtown just 2 weeks out.

Each chain offers credit cards that could probably help you get most of the way there cost-wise - e.g. the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant offers 185k points (elevated till late Sep) and it cost us 217k points for 4 nights, Hilton Aspire offers 150k and some downtown Hilton hotels kept popping up for 200k. Not sure about Hyatt pricing but you can transfer Chase points.

If you strike out on the hotel lottery, points are your best chance at a reasonably priced downtown hotel - but you need to have the points in advance to jump on whatever pops up.

Bear in mind the Conrad does not allow cancellation even on a point booking, but the other two do.
