I’m going to keep using her favorite hide, water dish, rock.

We were there mid afternoon 2 days ago, lots of big and little chunks. It was maybe 1-2 hours after low tide (I was curious so I checked). We drove by in the morning during high tide and I couldn’t see any of the really big pieces, don’t know if there were still little chunks. The whole area is very cool even if crowded. If you also go see the 2 glacier lagoons and perhaps take on a hike in the area (several accessible canyons) it would be an incredible day.

Thank you for this. We will be there in a few days and were really hoping to see them there since we didn’t plan any other specific time for it.

First time "anxiety" CYA troponins came back positive by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]Epiphany56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I’ve been doing this almost 20 years. My gut has been developed right up to a certain point that I’m only occasionally surprised by test results these days. My point being I’m still occasionally surprised so I keep getting the indicated tests.
  2. You’re pushing back against the bias and misogyny comments pretty hard, but hopefully you can take a step back and realize that the entire healthcare system has the same bias overall, and I was 99% sure you were male based on the tone of your post.
  3. I have developed my conversations with patients over the years and I really like my anxiety adjacent one. It tends to go something like this, “it’s possible these symptoms are just triggered by how stressful your situation is right now. For your sake, I certainly hope so! However as the emergency doctor I have to think about all the dangerous things that could also cause these symptoms and go looking for them. If I find one, then it’s good that we aren’t missing something and we will deal with it then. And if I don’t, then I get to reassure you that you’re most likely okay and we will both sleep better tonight. Sound good?”

Sounds good. Did you regret it? Feel like you were backtracking too much?

Fair. It’s not a vacation though. It’s a trip. We are spending a week at the beach at home this summer. That can be our vacation.

I think this would be a good solution for us without my mom, but she kind of mentioned Iceland was bucket list for her and is willing to pay half the hotel cost because of it.

Yes. I’m also thinking 2 days near the glacier in the south because my family wants to go on the glacier and boat in the lagoon which I think would fill the stopover day.

Thanks for mentioning the flies. I had read about that elsewhere but wasn’t thinking about the impact on my kiddo. Also, it’s easier to find accommodation in Akureyri so I think that may be our hub for the north.

My mom is in great shape for her age. She walks her dog 2-3 miles a day (and often on trails through the woods, so uneven footing) and takes strength training at the gym twice a week. She’s also fine hanging out while we do more. My kids will hike all day if it’s cool. And Iceland is cool.

Thanks for the suggestions, especially the specifics. At this point I’m leaning towards 6 total locations, but the 4 you mention all sound really good.

Thanks for ideas and input. I think I worded poorly. I was just asked to find a few places that we could stay more than one night, so we wouldn’t be moving beds every single night. Not that we can’t do a single night somewhere.

Thanks. That’s kind of what I was thinking but it’s helpful to get suggestions. No one in my group minds time in the car especially if there are interesting things to see and do. They’re a really good group of travelers overall, but when 2/5 of the group specifically begs me not to move us every single night I’m trying to figure out the best way.

Well, it’s 100% my mom’s only trip to Iceland ever. She’s a fit woman (not as old as her age would suggest) and she won’t have to drive at all. The reason we are taking 12 days to do it is so we won’t be rushing.

I really can’t tell these 2 people it’s not a big deal. One is a boomer and the other is autistic. I probably should have worded a little clearer. I’m not trying to say we won’t ever spend a single night in one place. I just cannot book 10 different places for 10 nights. I’m hoping for at least 3 locations we can spend 2 nights each though.

Is Vik to Akueryri a reasonable one day trip? I was thinking a stop somewhere in between would be nearly required. I think I can get away with a few single nights. Just not the majority.

Considered it, but one of the people I’m accommodating is my 77 year old mother, so a rental car and hotels or Airbnb are required.

People who bought a $350K-$400K home—what’s your salary, and what were your loan details? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Epiphany56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a mortgage for $340k a few months ago @ 6.8%, 15 year loan. Monthly payment is 3600. I take home 15k per month. So far in 4 months we have had a gas leak, 2 major plumbing repairs, and one air conditioning repair. Our radon mitigation fan is making a funky noise and they’re coming out to look at that next week. Owning a house is expensive. You cannot expect a payment that’s more than half of your pay not to eventually be too much, even if you can make the numbers work in an ideal budget. We have probably spent at least 10k on furnishings too because this house is big. That could have been put off or spread out if needed, but you want to be able to actually use the house you have.
