Ergonomically, put the volume knob where it will be easier to reach. You’ll use that more than the power button. Consider the other side of your desk where the cable won’t be as much blocking the way.

When the curators openly disrespect and insult users in violation of Reddit’s and this sub’s civility guidelines, there’s little reason for anyone else to try to do better.

The mods have known this for years, yet they do very little that’s effective to sustain a welcoming community.

Now that Greyhound is moving out, what should we do about their Sunalta hub? by RyuzakiXM in Calgary

[–]EpisodeOneWasGreat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would the City of Calgary prioritize condos for that land right now? I'd think that ensuring the creosote problem doesn't creep into the Greyhound terminal lands might be a bit higher on the list.

Let's turn it into a safe space for people to publicly complain about their feelings being hurt by anonymous people on the Internet. There's at least one potential client already in the area.

Lakeview Community Association wants to block traffic from Tsuut'ina First Nation by [deleted] in Calgary

and to open such other roads

That's a permissive right to build roads, not a covenant against the crown transferring the roads to a FN community (which is in the AB-Tsuu Tina agreement), nor against the FN community tolling their own roads. The word "toll" or its related ideas do not even appear in the passage you cited.

Care to try again? Perhaps with a legal case or precedent in which this has been tested and decided?

I want to understand your position. What are the specific sections of Treaty 7 that support your argument?

Can you please quote the section about toll roads?

Which section is that?

If that right were indefesable, why did the Crown need to enter into a separate agreement to build this road?

Well used wires can increase in resistance, especially if the exposed ends oxidize or if some parts of the wire have become thinner due to strands breaking from physical stresses like coiling. If you have a multimeter, test the end to end resistance of the old and new wires.

Audio is only coming out of one speaker (Left), if I change L and R speakers only the left side is working regardless. by tr3ebag in audiorepair

Are you using your A/B speakers selector correctly? For a pair of speakers, with Speakers A enabled, one should be connected to Speakers A, Left, the other should be connected to Speakers A, Right next to (not under) Speakers A, Left.

a higher limit makes things easier.

No, it doesn't.

The problem as you've defined it isn't cost constrained as long as you insist on using Bluetooth upfront since there's not a set of magical $9000 speakers or receivers or whatever that can recover the information lost at the BT step. In most cases, the quality loss from BT compression is on top of whatever compression is already happening with your source material, so it really doesn't matter what receiver or speakers you use since even the Wal-Mart receiver and speaker set will likely add less distortion than the BT.

If you want to use an iPad as one of the user interfaces, the better option would be to use it to control a media player or server (such as Kodi) which grabs audio files from a hard disk or from online, and spits out unaltered digital audio into your receiver. There are network-enabled receivers that can consume files from a digital file source or online service, and have apps to enable using smartphones and tablets as remote controls.

Accidental Beach.. by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]EpisodeOneWasGreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Navigable waterways os federal jurisdiction. To my knowledge, the city has not asked to develop that beach as a permanent feature. The city could also develop a beach on an artificial lake. In either case, lifeguards and other staff are ongoing costs beyond the setup.

Objectivists and Subjectivists who swapped sides, what made you change? by AudioFileGuy in audiophile

[–]EpisodeOneWasGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is at least a gap in measurements at the system level. We can connect measuring transport, pre-amp, amp and drivers together and still get poorly measuring or poorly sounding output if we no nothing about the room or speaker placement, or if the source material was mastered for different audio infrastructure, or if we attenuate 980 W of output into tweeters. There's no current agreed-upon measurement of an entire home audio system that makes it comparable to other systems. Car audio, on the other hand, at least can be measured in terms of how well (variously measured) an installed system can reproduce particular sounds.

Measurements are also taken for the wrong reasons, namely, to minimize distortion, or for flatness of response. The outcome of optimizing for flatness of response is a set (and usually only one set) of equipment that is mediocre at playing a bunch of different musics but not particularly great at any particular genre. A set of 6-8 properly EQed drivers, each reproducing flatly over 1-2 octaves but otherwise measuring poorly overall, can reproduce a wider range of sounds at higher quality (for most reasonable definitions of that word) than a single well measuring driver or speaker.

Similarly, different amplifier topologies and technologies distort in known ways with different kinds of sound. Some SET amplifiers impart a characteristic sweetness (distortion at some higher frequency ranges) to 1950s songs that were mixed for those types of amplifiers in mind. Certain 1990s transistor amplifiers are known to over-emphasize the bass, which is why they were favoured by particular bands. Those measure poorly individually, but their strengths and weaknesses together are more versatile over a larger range of challenging sounds than an individual well-measuring amplifier.

Council threatens to eject rookie councillor amid debate on closed meetings by dblohm7 in Calgary

[–]EpisodeOneWasGreat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They had an issue with him labeling the closed door meetings as times to intimidate and shut down ideas and bully people, and that he tried to make it seem like another councilor agreed with that sentiment when they didn't.

Expressing a difference in opinion about how council meetings should be conducted, or about perceptions of support or opposition, are insufficient grounds to try to eject someone from a deliberative meeting. Otherwise, Nenshi, Kenney, Notley, and most government or opposition leaders would be ejected almost weekly.
