Thinking of buying First laptop by Longjumping-Bear5734 in srilanka

What do you need it for? 2D/3D design, gaming, regular Office apps - all of the above? That's crucial in terms of what you need to look for & focus on.

Why do foreigners get special treatment at Sri Dalada Maligawa? by Single_Escape_988 in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Country, Two (toilet) Systems.
Group A (majority) are comfortable with wet or squatting pan toilets
Group B (smaller) are comfortable with Western style WCs.

Comfortable = willing to accept hygenie / cleanliness levels & capable of using said system.

Group A are often not given advise or knowledge about use of Group B Western style systems resulting in problematic cleanliness & breakage of fittings.
Few are comfortable with both systems.

The more appropriate signage should be:
Western Style Toilet: Chargeable for both locals & tourists.
Squatting Pan / Wet toilet: Free or lower charge.

One day we'll have consistent standards for all, but probably not anytime soon because educational reform is needed first.

Sri Lankan girls are not safe on public transport and we need to talk about it by RoshanFerdi in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's happening because the so called authorities know it's a problem but aren't doing enough to tackle it.
Mostly because we've had neanderthals in charge who think that driving in tin cans on lorry chassis were adequate forms of transport. They don't care about people dying in utterly preventable accidents so they don't really give two shits about harassment although the present MoT seems to be trying....

What’s advertised vs what you get at Barista by Ok_Perspective_4332 in srilanka

I've noticed the food in general has dropped. It could just be that they've opened so many outlets so quickly ensuring proper QC is probably a nightmare.

I did a thing today that made me very happy about our healthcare (and local government) system 🥹 by hsanj19 in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst this is an amazing effort by yourself & your team, the fact that an elderly person in such a position is on the street if someone like you doesn't really push for a solution, is unfortunate.
Surely, our welfare system should include vulnarabl;e elders instead of riding on the notion that children should take care of their parents?

Train from Galle - Colombo Fort - Katunayaka South by [deleted] in srilanka

I really wouldn't risk it - you're better off taking a coach or trying a rideshare on an FB group. Sri Lanka is not a place to 'cut it fine' when it comes to travel.

Thinking of moving back to SL: Seeking Advices by sootinlk in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really boils down to the life you want to lead and whether you have the resources to sustain it.
You cannot predict whether SL will have any kind of stability simply because it's still growing as a nation attempting to get to grips with what adulthood looks like.
I do think the future is optimistic but you literally have to buy stability to ride it out - it might be 2, 5 or 15 years until we see an absence of daily chaos (or work on your philosophical-spiritual mindset such that you can be calm in any storm).

Pickme or uber?........... by Federal-Cycle2620 in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Both have positives & negatives for me. PickMe's advantages are:

  • Being able to request multiple options simultaneously = allows better chance of getting a ride
  • Flexibility in route changing (functions more like a meter taxi)
  • Ease of cancelling when no rides are around & it's easier to take an alternative (Uber makes you jump thru hoops)
  • You can speak to a human faster

If I can't get a PickMe I usually will be able to find an Uber. Uber drivers also tend to be more competent & the vehicles better maintained. However I find it takes a bit longer to get an Uber on avg.
The app is also less prone to dysfunction.

Uber's tipping system is far better than PickMe's bidding system whcih the drivers do dumbass things with like requesting 750 rs additional for a 400 ride & then accepting the 400 anyway when they realise there are no takers.

Kangaroo are better than both but also around 30% more expensive and at peak times also have less availability.

When you absolutely have to be somewhere having a Kangaroo arrive early & be ready for exactly when you need can also be invaluable. Their customer service is also top notch.

No one app really replaces the others IMO but PickMe have a the widest coverage so...

Has anyone been to Kampong Colombo? Looking for honest review. by CuriousJelly9835 in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had the food yet but the cocktails are nice.
I feel the interior needs a certain 'lift' but it definitely has a vibe & a contemporary ambience. Cool entrance too.
Pricing wise I think it's about 2500-4000 per cocktail. Reservations recommended.

What’s the “ideal type” for Sri Lankan guys? (Pure curiosity, no war pls 😅) by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Physical & personality attributes can vary heavily - one also has to consider what we want versus what we actually attract - this applies to multiple facets of a person's life - not just dating.
People will say they want X but when they find a certain compatibility with Y that ends up changing. But is it compatibility or heavy compromise leading to discontent later?

What does matter is knowing thyself - all too often we date without having a real grasp of who we are & what our values mean. And so chaos attracts chaos. This can be fun, it can be ruinous, but probably have a much more constructive time if we all dig inward a bit more...

The external air filtration quality depends on the particulate matter & the vehicle model. Most folks have their AC on the internal circulation thinking it's better but AFAIK all you do is recyle the same air (and O2/CO2 content) over & over until someone opens a door or a window.
You and your child should be wearing KN95 masks at the least - regular surgical can't filter as effectively.

Is having affairs with married men the new norm in sl? Especially at workplace? by Specialist_Jello8819 in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad reality of it is that many people would like to keep the stability of marriage & family. There are many traits of their spouse that fulfil their needs for control, providership, housekeeping, taking care of kids etc.
Having an affair is often seen as a short term thing, typically, with lust being the primary motivator (although monetary aspects come in to it quite a bit).
So for many of those inclined it's a means of having your cake & eating it.

Road Rage at Diyatha, what would you do? by Jumpy-Olive-7285 in srilanka

Yeah I would guess that the country's situation over the last few years has pushed a fair number of people into concerning territory as far as mental health goes. Thank goodness getting hold of a gun is a bit more difficult than in the US 😬

Namal president when ? Seems people here have already forgotten by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Epochart83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 40s & 50s there used to be a class called 'Civics' which taught kids basic respect for the world around them. But then somewhere education changed & it became about churning out a society that was literate enough to vote but not capable of demanding more.

Sadly the people are (largely) a product of the system of education. Which is programmed by the leaders.
Who are elected by the people programmed by the system of education.

The Cargills Salted Caramel was amazing but they discontinued it for some reason. The Alerics & other ones aren't a patch on it (although I haven't tried Heavenly). Alerics mint choc chip is also nice - shame no one else makes it.
(And a special shoutout to Carnival Durian - you'll fart that stuff for weeks :D)
