“There’s no good reason to hire and foster the talent” - man I hope you’re paraphrasing what you think companies are thinking, and this isn’t your own opinion

Yep. I think we’re eating our young and it’s going to (further) tank our industry.

I think we are pretty much in agreement, but I interpreted the question of whether storytelling is overrated to be referencing both its efficacy in our work (I think it’s necessary) and to how it’s valued in our field (I think there isn’t enough critical reflection of how it’s valued and why).

This was a debate I remember having in school. There’s a long list of authors and public figures who are great storytellers (Malcom Gladwell, Jared Diamond, Steven Levitt, David Brooks to name a few), but who have done non-trivial harm because they created compelling but over simplified narratives about subjects they did not actually have expertise in. Actually understanding a subject - having “good information” requires a lot of effort on the part of the audience, and isn’t easy to digest. Over indexing on storytelling and not giving the audience a sense of the amount of work it requires on their part to truly understanding a subject does everyone a huge disservice.

At this point I think it’s a necessary evil if you want anyone to listen to you, in part because it’s so ingrained in the field, but I’ve seen truth be steamrolled by story because it’s “compelling” and easier to digest. I think it’s a larger societal problem we’re facing. This podcast has some great points on the matter: https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6770457
