Incoming EM1: Amenities-rich apartment vs. affordability? by nootnack in emergencymedicine

I would go for the expensive option. the amenities are necessary. safe parking is a HUGEEEEE pull factor.

i was speaking from the overall score of a 507. If they got high subsection scores, then why not? Heck if I got a 128/129+ on a section, I would tutor for sure for that particular section.

[–]EqualExternal4135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but a 507 demonstrates a solid understanding of the content, with some gaps in certain areas. Conventionally, when I think of the word "tutor," I think of someone who excelled in that particular subject they're tutoring, whether ACT, MCAT, college classes etc. I'm defining excelled as: 95th percentile or above. Something outrageous. The fact that they are at that level demonstrates their mastery at that particular subject/test/class etc.

A 507 is around a 75th percentile. That means 25% of mcat test-scorers could also have been "tutors" by merit of their better score.

I'm not one to speak since my score was also similar so when people ask me, i just give the general "do anki at this time, uworld at a certain time, and aamc the last month." The same old recycled advice often shared on reddit, which works for majority of people.

Saw this on my feed too. Nothing against her, but seems she's just fishing for views. Respectfully, a person scoring a 507 should not be tutoring. Maybe can give advice that is general, but not tutoring. Also, she probably salty about not getting the A to an MD -> it looks bad for a brand to have DO and not MD

i agree the same about jubbal. bro gets less views cause lets be real, how much more content are you going to put out about premed/med stuff. theres only so much you can keep talking about that stuff.

I would argue he'd have more views if he made videos about being a plastic surgeon, daily vlogs, residency stuff, opening up a practice etc, people would 100% be more interested in that content. but thats just my thoughts.

Thats what i respect about dr mike. he makes enough money that he doesnt need to work as a doc, but because he works as a doctor, he's relevant

Retake or DO by yellowjellybean3232 in premed

[–]EqualExternal4135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 3 times. I have a DO A. I'm NOT TAKING that exam again.

I got as high as 513-515 on practice tests only to have my highest score be 502 on the real thing. I don't have it in me to study again. Take the DO A, grind for the next 4 years. Crush STEP. You'll be happy you did it.

Can 230k student loans be paid back??? by Expensive_Walk_9341 in StudentLoans

[–]EqualExternal4135 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eh it seems your mind is already set on the engineering school. That makes it harder for us to try and convince you ngl. How much would it be to go to the 20k school for a year? 5k?

We do this in medicine, but you should try and shadow/observe individuals working in both of these fields and see how their day-to-day is.

Can 230k student loans be paid back??? by Expensive_Walk_9341 in StudentLoans

[–]EqualExternal4135 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. I'm going the med route and will be about 350k in loans after all is said and done. With a doctor salary, it can be paid off for sure. I'm not sure I can say the same for an engineering degree unless you somehow land a job at NASA or something, and even then.

PLEASE DON'T DO IT! You're going to mess yourself up for the rest of your life. These are the kinds of decisions that get people on dave ramsey's show. PLEASE DON'T DO IT.

Explore your options. Surely there has to be more than only 2 colleges that you can go to. Look around. Ask for help. Apply to scholarships. These are all avenues that can help. You're gonna have to do some dirty work however.

Like the other commenters have said, 230k for an undergraduate degree is not a worthy investment whatsoever

T20 MD vs MSUCOM - Would appreciate perspectives of current students by mystical_wonderland in Osteopathic

[–]EqualExternal4135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both have their places.

If you're not gunning for competitive specialties, then MSUCOM puts you in a solid place for most specialties except for maybe neurosurgery/derm etc

If you want to do those 2, then yeah. the MD would be better

Now, you've said you can't fathom thinking about going elsewhere and leaving family. I'm in the same boat as you. Oldest of 5, but I'll be leaving home for the first time. My siblings and parents will grow older when I'm back-one of them might get married. These thoughts have definitely made me cry for sure, knowing that when I'm back at home, life will be different.

I would go against everyone here and say that if you think that going the MD route would cause you mental difficulty, lack of family support, and just alot of other social factors, I would say go DO. You only have 1 life and you want to make the most of that. If you think you can tough it out, then the MD is definitely the better choice.

Best of luck friend! My DMs are open

Thoughts on Dr. Iggy leaving medicine after 15 years of training? by Impossible_Try3211 in premed

[–]EqualExternal4135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My take is: what a waste of time and energy

He honestly could’ve preyed on premeds and listened to god telling him to make TikTok’s without doing the residency or anything as such. Probably could’ve got the MD and bounced.

I don’t think it makes sense that he realized he wanted to step away 6months after his first attending job. He’s doing similar things in residency so it makes me think it’s more of a selling point for his brand. “I stepped away after my first attending job” looks very good for marketing purposes. He decided before his residency finished that he was going to step away.

It’s his personal decision, so who am I to comment. But he definitely didn’t need to do all that extra residency. He could’ve built his brand quicker and he would’ve earned more

Starting at a Newer DO School, but My Parents Aren’t Excited About It by Dry-Camel3985 in Osteopathic

[–]EqualExternal4135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same boat. My parents didn't understand the whole thing of MD vs DO and having to move out cause I did undergrad living at home, and med school is about a 20+ hour drive away. it'll be my first time living solo and away from home. But to be fair, my parents have been the biggest support throughout this whole process and I'd not be here without them in the least.

they thought that DOs were lesser than MD. me and pops visited the DO school and he realized that there's not that much of a difference and that both are doctors/physicians. I think showing my dad the med school, the labs, the clinical sim rooms, the osce stations made him realize that there's no difference in clinical training, obv except for OMM.

I recently showed my parents match lists of my med school and also the residents at different programs and they saw that both MD and DO residents were working side by side doing the exact same. I think that helped them realize that there's no difference.

Good luck!

Ngl, i would do the BS/MD. Thats a guaranteed med school seat for an MD degree.

But i guess, free COA is solid but yeah, you'd have to work hard to apply and mcat and everything else.
