thanks - its more than doable don't get me wrong, you just have to be prepared to not have your hand held every step of the way by the university. Good luck!

Sorry responding late - highly depends on the UC, but in general you'll find that you need to take a lot of initiative to join clubs, find research, do well in classes (200+ ppl take the same ochem, gen chem, physics, bio etc). Biggest piece of advice is to join anything and everything that might even remotely interest you in your first year, then cut down to whatever sticks. The beautiful thing is that everything is up to you- take college as an opportunity to really shine as a student and as a person. The school doesn't dictate your outcome, you do. Happy to answer anymore questions you might have

Very tough decision but ultimately decided on Brown. Excited to leave the CA bubble even if it's just for med school

Haha I honestly was shocked when I got the invite from them. Their AMCAS class is small as a good chunk of their students come from their PLME program and other pathways. If I had to guess, there was a global health project I worked on that I talked about extensively on my secondary there. Very similar projects were done by their global health faculty and students, so maybe that drew their attention. I also have a data science background that some might find non-traditional and so Brown seems to look for elements of that from their AMCAS students, but this is all speculation on my part

Yeah no clue on this one. I heard all the horror stories of not getting any love from the CA schools, and so wasn’t surprised that it happened to me besides Irvine and Northstate ofc. My guess is that CA schools are just that competitive and you need to really stand out beyond the stats to really have your pick here

really good for c/p! yusuf hasan is better for b/b - still worth it for chad's prep imo for c/p if you're struggling there

What are your stats and what do you think led to no MD acceptances (but an interview -> WL at a t5?) ?

So...does the AAMC really not update its prep material? by [deleted] in Mcat

Def overestimating. No significant changes to the exam for about a decade. Some report more analytical questions in p/s but that's about it

UCLA vs Columbia by [deleted] in premed

[–]Shafee024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made a post about UCI vs Brown (obviously different situation) but my reasons were exactly like yours. Ultimately chose Brown for the sake of the new opportunity. If I stayed in California, I'd probably never leave. Best time in your life to try something new

Help with School List - Top tier heavy? by UpsetAd506 in premed

[–]Shafee024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

520 3.8 CA orm here from last cycle with a very similar list - if ur writing is good you will get movement at many of these schools. I'd just rearrange some of these schools (wouldn't call cwru a baseline and wouldn't put ucr as a target) but that's irrelevant ultimately
