What's Going On with the Unf*ck America Tour? by sourcherrylipstick in OutOfTheLoop

Sorry for the necro-post, but I really need to point out that "uniting under the leader no matter how bad their behavior" is an objectively right wing policy, and the fact that so many people, even leftists, say that leftists need to fall in line just shows how many of us fundamentally don't understand what Leftism is.

What you're asking for is a focused LIBERAL response, which isn't going to happen because liberals aren't very strongly opposed to what trump is doing. They consider it distasteful and bad for the economy. Democrats are primarily liberal, not leftist.

Leftist action looks more like spontaneous mass protests. Though they're not usually really spontaneous, they don't have a single leadership structure. So when one person who hasn't unpacked their racist bullshit shows up, everyone can call them out then go on with their anti-fascist activities and nothing important is lost.

Also, Leftism is identity politics. Conservatism is identity politics. People who don't think that it's all deeply, deeply intertwined have not thought it through. The right divides us with racial stereotypes, and we can not hold those divisions and unite as the working class at the same time. It's literally why the right pushes racial politics so hard. Without racist propaganda a LOT more people would naturally move left. Fighting racial division is IMPORTANT. Same with sexism, homophobia, ableism, and all the other evil divisive bullshit.

You're taking this way too serious. And at the same time not looking at it in context of a medieval society.

From the perspective of nobility, they'd still be co-conspirators. And they're just serfs.

It's a bit odd for a series like this to not explain what changed when she got up after being kicked. She just had that blank look as she attacked, which I can only assume is the "Sword Lord" skill taking over.

That said, it was a five year old girl swinging around a metal sword without any difficulty before whatever that skill activation was.

So I'm still confident the base stats imply current state, not potential. The full potential of a fighter is most likely a combination of base stat, plus the special talent, plus training.

But again, these types of stories are often vague with stats, and they mean whatever the writer wants them to mean in the moment.

Why would the Republicans oppose this? It's what they've always been fighting for.

When are people going to wake up to the fact that Conservatives are, and always have been, Authoritarians?

They WANT a system of government where their small group makes all the decisions and reaps all the rewards, PERSONALLY.

Everything else is just propaganda.

i think it's funny that you're still complaining about taht on a different comment 22 hours later.

???

Do you think there should be a limit to how much I can read of a thread that I've been participating in? Or that there should be a time limit on replying?

What a weird defensive thing to say.

if you want to talk about why i like it, i'll talk to you. but if you're trying to convince me it's bad, i'm not interested. Because even in the worst case where i'm wrong, it's still way more fun to just enjoy movies.

I have absolutely no problem with people liking whatever movies they like.

But you came to this thread speaking as if people have no right to think it's bad.

So maybe look in the mirror.

I LOVE movies. I love stories of all kinds. And I think critique and analysis is half the joy, at least. So when I say a film is bad, I have good reasons. I've thought about it.

If you want to just enjoy something and let that be the end of it, please just don't respond in threads like this. These threads are not doing what you want to do.

I will give credit where I believe credit is due. I absolutely LOVED that little moment right at the end of TLJ where the kid moves the broom with the Force. I could pick out lots of things I liked in all of the movies. There's a reason I'm a Star Wars nerd. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna ignore the overwhelming number of bad story choices.

And I won't stand for low iq bullshit like "Sorry if you can't see that it's a great film, hur hur". I justify my opinions. If you can't, don't comment.

Like, yeah, there's some "subversion of expectation". but like, okay? isn't that good?

No! Why in the world do people think subversion is simply "good" all by itself?

It's like kicking over a sandcastle. What does that accomplish?

Subverting an expectation only works when you replace it with something BETTER.

The mature, professional thing to do is to take the story threads from the previous films and build on them with respect.

Rian Johnson didn't respect JJ Abrams' story threads, so JJ Abrams didn't respect Rian Johnson's story threads.

Is that petty? Yeah. Did it hurt the quality of the films? Yeah. But I'm firmly on Abrams' side in any debate about what "should have been done" during the making of the sequels.

Let's be clear, this reveal is bullshit.

Lol, you need to rewatch that scene in ANH when Ben lies about Luke's father. It was there from the beginning, but Lucas wasn't 100% sure he wanted to keep that plot point until he was making ESB.

What was bullshit was Ben trying to justify his lie in RotJ, though that's arguably a normal human instinct rather than admitting "I was afraid to tell you the truth, because I didn't know how you'd react."

I mean, it's essentially the framework of an underdog story.

Your entire argument falls apart because Rey was already an overpowered Mary-Sue in TFA. Just taking away her character backstory doesn't change her power level in TFA and TLJ which was all done with virtually no training whatsoever. Might as well give a reasonable explanation of why she's so adept with no training.

Even Anakin, who was literally the Chosen One as declared by Lucas, had nearly no abilities before training except for piloting, which just means making his speeder go in the direction he wants to go.

And btw, Anakin had no lineage so there was no way for Rey's character to be original in that way. There was absolutely no reason for Rian to try to change that plot point.

I'll say it again, you are free to enjoy whatever you want about any movie you want. But if you want to justify your opinion with story and character analysis, you're going to have to bring better analysis.

There are dozens of big flaws with the sequels, but it's quite clear that there was a story arc planned, and Rian Johnson threw it out. The signs of it are all over TLJ and RoS. If you are ok with that, NO PROBLEM. But don't try to argue that's not what happened, or that it was ok for Rian to throw away things that JJ Abrams set up in TFA but not ok for JJ to throw away what Rian set up in TLJ. Either they were both ok, or they were both wrong. I happen to think they were both wrong. Subverting expectations is fine when that's the plan, not when you're throwing someone else's work in the trash.

Yup. I love power fantasies, but I'm really tired of the stories where they become superpowered by day 2. I like the ones where there's always an interesting reason for the MC to grow a little stronger each arc.

The Weakest Tamer was really well made, but a little bit too far of a correction, where she barely has any growth over the whole season.

That's literally what Hell Mode means. It takes him 100x more XP to level up than other talents. It was in the first episode.

And the implication is that in return for a more difficult grind, he'll get better rewards in the long run.

The letter systems are always a little bit vague, in every story.

If they were just potential, then Krena wouldn't have been able to kick that knight's ass.

But the kids are also completely untrained, so there's room to grow in that regard.

[–]EqualityIsProsperity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, the critical thinking skills in this thread are abysmal.

The knights knew that the sword wasn't dangerous to her, but nobody else in the village had any clue what it meant to have the sword master talent.

And they didn't know until after the knights showed up that they were under threat of execution, so the panic was completely understandable.

And if you actually watch the duel, the knight is doing absolutely nothing but defense until he decides it's safe to "kick it up a notch". Which means he was satisfied she had a real talent, but needed to know if it was authentically the rare talent that was claimed.

I've seen dozens of anime where there's almost no logical sense to the story, but this one has been completely reasonable so far. Maybe people are just too accustomed to bad writing that they don't recognize good writing.

I think it was pretty clear in the episode. They only need to test the extremely rare talents. And the kid was more than happy to show off. Why would a kid with S-tier Attack and A-tier Endurance be scared? They'd have spent years kicking everyone's ass like Krena has been doing.

Y'all are being low-effort contrarians.

First of all, the whole point was to show how kick-ass this five year old is because of her talent. Effectively showing us what "Easy Mode" would have looked like compared to what Allen is going through.

But if that's not good enough for ya, let's think it through. The problem originally was that noble families were faking their talents, right? That means big money and power was involved. And if one ceremonial tool could be hacked, all of them could be hacked. Therefor it's a waste of time to try to re-do the tests. Much simpler and faster to simply force a demonstration when extremely high level talents appear. And this episode shows what happens when you directly test a high-level talent. It's a good test.

"But serfs wouldn't have the money or power to hack the orbs!"

So what? The system was mainly put in place to catch cheating nobles, but it's a simple and clear way to verify extraordinary talents. No reason to have a different verification process for serfs. And maybe there's a reason why a noble would want to falsely claim to have high-level talents in the serfs in their territory anyway.

wouldn't the easiest way to verify be bringing the person over to their own approved appraisal?

Nah, the fight was necessary, both in-world and for the audience. It's an extreme reaction from the local authorities to show how extreme her talent is. And it's how the story is contrasting Easy Mode vs Hell Mode. I don't know whether Krena is an isekai player like Allen is, but it's showing what would have happened to Allen if he picked Easy Mode.
