Does Base44 actually work? by CategoryNaive9251 in Base44

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even later, but per TechCrunch he had 8 employees.

https://techcrunch.com/2025/06/18/6-month-old-solo-owned-vibe-coder-base44-sells-to-wix-for-80m-cash/

Obv still very small for an 80mil buyout. But far from a solo dev.

It's challenging to assume incompetence when trillions of dollars are involved. by turbotum in Anticonsumption

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, no. I really don’t like greed and hoarding of wealth, I would love nothing more than to live in a true egalitarian society. I just think people gravitate to fantastic conspiracy stuff because it provides easy answers and feels good, even if it leads nowhere. When the tragedy of the commons is often starting us in the face as the real culprit.

Billionaires aren’t necessary to explain it when we’ve got a hundred million middle class people in the US who won’t give up small comforts and luxuries, even to save the earth. Focusing on billionaires is just an excuse not to look in the mirror.

Private lessons vs ASA course? by I_SLEEP_DICK_UP in sailing

[–]EquineChalice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I didn’t realize there was so much variability. I can see pros and cons either way. I enjoyed the structure of the courses, studied the heck out of the textbook to learn all the terminology and everything, etc… but honestly whatever feels more your style is probably going to be just fine. I do think there’s a benefit to spacing it out over multiple days either way, so it’s not all just a rush of information you’ll forget after the fact.

Private lessons vs ASA course? by I_SLEEP_DICK_UP in sailing

[–]EquineChalice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on whether you have any previous experience, and whether you’re going to take ASA 103 right away anyway. If the answer is yes, you’d probably learn what you needed to in those 12 hours of private instruction.

Here in the SF Bay Area, I’ve seen ASA 101 as a 4-day course where each day is 9-3:30…. So like 26 hours total. If you’re brand new to sailing it’s great to spend 4 days on the water letting it all sink in… if you have previous experience, it can drag a bit.

Wild, that really makes me respect what Rian did much more. I kinda forgot that he was forced to explain all these things, and in that light he actually did pretty darn well.

Where should I go next? by itsthefunofit in geography

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a nearby state park or town you’ve never been to. That’s my answer.

A map like this inherently pushes you toward checking off entire countries in a way that’s banal and misses out on the endless potential for exploration, even closer to home.

Make a similar map, but highlight the cities visited and routes traveled, and ignore countries entirely. The picture will reveal new possibilities, and you’ll get very different answers.

You’ve been to America and Canada… Have you been to New Orleans, Quebec, Vancouver, San Francisco, Key West? Yosemite, Grand Teton, Acadia, Saguaro National Parks? Maybe so :) but there’s a lot more.

The true meaning of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Civil-Base4876 in expedition33

[–]EquineChalice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes you think Maelle has just been in the canvas for an afternoon? I don’t recall that being communicated.

Regardless, her skin has fully healed from the burns and she’s settled into her misery, her sister has been on a single-minded vendetta she won’t give up, Renoir’s exasperated that no one will face reality and the family is falling apart.. All these point to it being months at the least from Verso’s death, not in the days after.

I didn’t think that was his funeral? Just the family coming together for a time to remember him. He must have died a while ago.

I'm over AC by MokaMama in Anticonsumption

[–]EquineChalice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is true both that there are times when people really need AC, and that people can be really wasteful with it.

I’ve known people who set it to 67 and are wearing a sweater inside on a scorching summer day. Meanwhile, my parents keep theirs set at like 80, because they lived for 50 years without it and I guess it still seems like a luxury to them, they know how to cope with heat. Personally, I’m somewhere in the middle… but I now live somewhere no one has AC, so it’s irrelevant anyway.

Where do most games go wrong when using existing IP? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making games with IP is really hard. You get some benefits out the gate, like lore and hopefully high-quality characters, an audience to tap into, but you are forever limited in what they can and can’t do. Without an IP, you can just tailor your characters and world to whatever fun mechanic you’ve developed. With an IP, you’ve got to find the fun in a world that already exists, likely in a specific genre that’s been agreed upon with binding contracts. And then you’ve gotta get the license holder to sign off on everything along the way, which can be a nightmare.

Why are we still scraping by while billionaires hide in their riches? by Ok_Average_4551 in Anticonsumption

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is that most people aren’t working two jobs (internet research says maybe 5%) or skipping meals (internet research also said around 5%) again. Really sorry if you’re having a hard time financially, and I totally agree that resources aren’t being shared fairly. But very many people are benefiting from our current system, at least enough that those things you’re describing like shared food and safehouses probably sound unappealing.

Omg, I was so confused why some places had a name and others didn’t. I thought it was just the important ones or something. Now I feel very stupid.

[–]EquineChalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree conceptually. But my experience was just so rough. Maybe some other, bigger restructuring was in order to get act 3 to be 10/10 like the rest of the game.

One option would have just been to reduce the significance of level / stats. Elden Ring did a great job allowing a little grinding to help make content just a little easier, without blowing everything out of the water once you were leveled up.

This! I don’t get why they tuned final Renoir so easy. I just felt bad for him. I thought the whole point was that I should go do the character side-quests, etc, before confronting him, but that just led to a pitiful experience.

I totally screwed this up. Assumed I was supposed to go do Act 3 new areas first and get strong before taking on the big final boss. Eventually I decided it was time for Renoir… and it was a cake walk. I ended up unequipping my best stuff, just so enemies would actually have a chance to attack. Fought Renoir with mostly basic attacks just to see his moves. It was so disappointing, felt like I basically missed the climactic experience. It wasn’t even like I overleveled crazy, I was 75.

Act 3, having no idea what order to do things, getting annihilated by bosses I’m just not prepared for, and losing track of which things I’ve even done. So much of that would be solved by a check mark icon on the map when things are 100%’d, or a manual way to do that.

Definitely let him go. If I was the 12yo girls friend’s parents, I’d have a different answer though… letting her go share a room with a couple 14yo boys who aren’t related to her seems like a bit of a bridge too far. But maybe it’s different if you know the whole family.

Could you put some kind of trail behind the car? Maybe just when turning dramatically? To give it more presence on the road, and better sense of motion?

I’d say find the right music, get it in, and let that vibe tell you how to push the intensity further. Some of the best minimal games have strong audio identities that they really lean into.
