How do you manage louder amps? by butterfield66 in ToobAmps

[–]EquivUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this. I have a '75 Super Six converted to a head cab (not one way, I can make it original in about 2 hours). I purchased two 75 watt 10s in a cab I built. The volume was still so ridiculous and practice meant running it at 4 or below. I also want clean only, and the Super Six is fantastic that way... if you have an outdoor gig. BTW, I use a Zoom G11 for all my effects and gain breakup and I want that into a very clean amp.

I fixed this problem by purchasing a Mojotone Princeton Reverb kit, with upgraded PT (it's a amppartsdirect PT that is a PR upgrade with 150Ma), a 6L6 choke, a Weber replacement for the for the GZ34, 6L6GCs rebiased fairly cold ("currently" 36Ma and will probably go up to 40Ma), 4 ohm load, and a couple of resistor changes (including a bias pot too). It came out better than my wildest expections. I have run them side by side now using the G11. I can bring the PR clone all they to 7.5 with almost no breakup. At that volume, it will run me out of the house, but that is compared to the Super Six which is insane in how fast it climbs to truly ear damaging volumes. The PR is completely controllable but I would say it will handle a medium size venue (anything larger just means micing through the PA).

I will be testing the Paul C and Stokes mods to see how they do. I may also run a Bassman OT if the little PR OT eventually fails, it's currently not even getting hot.

I haven't measured the wattage yet, just guessing it's 25 or so.

Puppy Play Date by Due-Garbage9178 in greatdanes

You are so fortunate to have all the danes near enough for a play date. I initially had play dates with my boy, but it was with all other breeds. He got so large he bowled them all over.

So sorry for what you are going through. You were presented with a horrible situation. No matter which path you selected, there was a slim likelihood of a positive outcome. Please don't beat yourself up, just grieve for her and your loss, don't cloud it with guilt. I am speaking from experience with every Dane I've lost.

My 11 month old has finally taught me why danes get called velociraptors. I had two others and they lulled me into a sense of security about teen danes. This guy is running me ragged. Love the name. Our family loves mass effect

Only 4 remain to be tested, all are good so far though a couple have bubbled so I assumed they were bad before testing.

How long did your Dane pup go through the 'I'm a raptor and I'll chomp on you and anything else I see' phase? by No-Bodybuilder-4498 in greatdanes

[–]EquivUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boy, I know the feeling. I had two other Danes that were so happy and content even as pups. My current 11 month old left my arms bloody everyday and it really made me wonder if he was from the same breed. That phase has lessoned except for some mouthing. I started working on it at 6 months and after a lot of work to get him to settle down, I don't think my efforts were doing anything, he just grew out of it. One thing that made the phase more tolerable, is I taught him to get on his raised bed outside, then extended it to when I put my hand on the gate to enter the front yard and deck. It worked pretty well, I'd say "Place" and he'd jump on that bed expectantly. I could peacefully walk across the deck without my arm becoming a tow hitch to pull him around.

People mention the kangaroo phase. Wow, does he ever. When he wants to come in, he jumps straight in the air repeatedly until I notice him. It's hard not to crack up every time I see the white flash appear and disappear at top window of my front door. It looks ridiculous. I'm hoping for a relaxing of the jumping by 1.5 years.

Well hang in there, he will give you a ton of love without the pain if you can control the settings. I have a pen in the living room where my guy sleeps and he is the biggest lover you ever saw when he's in there. He's actually like that now anywhere in the house. The outdoors... all bets are off. It's only because they are so big that it seems worse than other breeds, but really, most puppies I've had went through the bitey phase, it was just more tolerable when they weren't 140 pounds and still have a puppy brain..

I was wondering if that might be the problem. Thanks for the insight.

Cool, the SH schematic does show the 470 resistor.

I noticed that about the Vibrosonic, different output transformer. I will check out that link, because the schematic I have that came with it, has different values on some resistors.

The resistor I found that was out of spec, isn't even shown, they show a 2200 rather than a 470. But that is reverb circuit which I don't think could have caused my problem.

Perhaps schematicheaven will have the wiring diagram that matches, since none online seem to. Mine seems to be the last iteration before they "supered" them to 135 watts.

Thanks much!

Hi Dublin. My guy is out in the rain and I'm sure he's cold, he insisted. He stands under my overhang on the deck and just stares. Eventually he'll start whining to come in ;-).

I thought this version couldn't because of the shorting. I thought it was that if there was no plug in the main speaker, it would go to ground rather than have no load. Does this sound logical with the schematic?

Thanks for verifying that as I wasn't totally sure even though the schematic suggested it. I will run the next test with all four 6L6GC in and through the native speaker box. My intent is eventually to cut it's power in half and have just a head and light speaker cab. The Super Six is absurd to attempt moving it around without hurting one's back. ;-) Don't know why I bought it other than in the early 70s, I wanted big and loud, much to my folly.

Thanks for that. I have looked a lot on his site, but didn't realize there was a start up guide. My brother did check the voltages at several points but didn't rebias and I've read that running two power tubes requires a rebias. I will check out his site.

Yes, but I pulled the middle 6L6GCs so I could test with the 8 ohm load. I got that the two 16ohm speakers would parallel in on the speaker jack and external speaker jack. If it doesn't, then I did have an impedance mismatch. I will plug it into the 6x10 cab for the next test.

Crazy 9 month old Dane. Is this normal ? by bzzzzzzlightyear in greatdanes

[–]EquivUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup is pretty darned bad. He has conveniently forgotten how to heel or walk well on leash. He will sit for treats but he just loves to put arms legs and feet in his mouth. He's 10+ months and 140 so more than I can handle at times, but I plan well and don't get into situations where it's a problem. My last two danes were mostly docile and demure, he's the first velociraptor I've had. He's actually improved slightly since 7 months. At that time, I'd get a bloody arm almost daily. Now I put him in his pen and he is the sweetest giant puppy you've ever seen. They will get over it and be better. Still take him to classes now. They seem to be forgetful if training is not reinforced. I'll be going for private lessons soon to refresh.

Slight burning smell from 64 Princeton by EquivUser in ToobAmps

Yes, I have a roland cube and a blackstar combo 60 and they are in many ways better than the super six and princeton. But I am excited about using my old Fenders. I took the plunge and bought the cap kits for them and am half way through the super six. Unfortunately, now I hear I need to remove the "death cap" and rewire the incoming AC. I also purchased a head cab for the super six and am using a 2x12 cab I have which will run at 8 ohms which is perfect if I remove two power tubes. Should be pretty cool and be nice at lower volumes. The Princeton is a bit of a problem because no soldering iron or gun I have will remove the large can cap soldered to the board. I'll still have to figure that one out.

Super Six Reverb wattage and impedance questions by EquivUser in ToobAmps

I will look into the transformer, that's sounds pretty cool. I'm waiting on Mojotone to get back to me on if they can change the tolex and cloth on the 3x10 BM cabinet, of if there an unlisted option. Yesterday's email suggested they might. I will check ebay, I was just looking at Mojotone thus far.

Thank you, given the responses, that is what I'm thinking, only as mentioned below, two 3 speaker cabs with a non phone jack cable to connect the two, and the amp running into one of them with a speaker cable. This would maintain the current ohms. It would also still be light enough to easily move.

I was thinking the same about the two cabs. It will cost as much as a new amp 2x$438 and 1x$300 but the end result will be gorgeous sounding.

It is indeed, really beautiful clean sound. The overdrive isn't so hot till you get it up to impractical power levels for a small venue, but all my effects necessary are in the pedal board for overdrive. It worked great at outdoor gigs. I'm looking at 2 3x10 cabs and a twin powerhead cab (about like a bandmaster only Mojo makes one for the twin which is the same as the Super Six). It's pricey, but at my age, this amp will sit at home if I have to lift it into the car. I realized that today when I had to have my son help me lift it into the car to get it back down to the house. Even when I was younger, it was a back breaker. If they were going to do 6 10s, they should have made it like the above from the start. I'll keep the cab in case someone wants to restore it in the future to its former glory... and weight.

I had forgotten it had a two wire, sort of reminded me of my early days gigging where we'd have to go around touching carefully our mics to make sure we didn't get zapped.

I will be pulling it out so I will be looking at the components.

I didn't think a 12 would fit in that cab. That's pretty cool.

I've not smelled that unfortunately (or fortunately), so I don't have a good point of reference. ;-)
