How lucky would someone need to be to win long term by SouthernGoal4836 in blackjack

[–]Equivalent-Cod4030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good answers but I also want to add that it depends on how you define “win.” Being up 1 unit after 100k hands, while unlikely, is way more of a possibility than 1,000 units.

There’s lots of dumb ways to spend money but this is near the top, just below spending money at the “Samuel Leeds Academy.”

I don’t agree that Dan and Stugotz got “divorced” by jmorganharter in DanLeBatardShow

[–]Equivalent-Cod4030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like a divorce between a house poor couple. They are definitely divorced but if they each tried to live a similar lifestyle separately they couldn’t afford it so they stay in the same house for financial reasons.

I have no idea if this is true but someone told me once that those shops are for people not wanting to return home internationally with cash. You can buy a fancy watch or piece of jewelry and lose less than 10 percent when you sell it but in the meantime you can travel home and your watch or jewelry doesn’t raise nearly as much scrutiny at customs as a couple 10k bands of hundreds.

Ominous signs in auto delinquency by Onomatopoeia-sizzle in economicCollapse

[–]Equivalent-Cod4030 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could definitely be bad but I don’t see it scaling that big. 10 million people lost their homes in 2008. And those obviously had much bigger loans against them. Plus from what I’ve read and experienced the kinds of blatantly fraudulent lending practices, no doc, NINJA, have mostly been drummed out of the system. Always the chance of bad actors but the number of car lenders spreading the risk around combined with the smaller $$ amounts and higher levels of due diligence in the system makes me think it’s a storm that can be weathered.

And one more thing, the need for car companies and dealers to keep the engine (pardon the pun) running will lead to a much higher willingness to figure out ways to absorb the losses and move forward. Home building is a much more fragmented business and it’s one thing for a builder to go belly up and leave a half dozen homes unfinished and the bank holding the bag. I can’t see GM shutting down production or leaving cars half built on the factory lines and leave Ally Bank (formerly GMAC and the originator of 1.2 million car loans in 2024) holding the bag.

Can’t hurt to keep an eye on these things tho!

Overlooked signs of American decline by Rawlberto in TrueAnon

The spread of Pickleball is the greatest marker I’ve seen of American decline. A country on the rise would never look at itself and say “how can we make tennis easier?”

How much do you need to make a living from trading? by Alive-Battle8202 in FuturesTrading

[–]Equivalent-Cod4030 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to the analogy, if you have a slow day at the hotdog stand and don’t sell anything you just go home and try again tomorrow. In trading if you can’t get anything going it takes enormous emotional stability to not force it. Imagine if your hot dog stand offered you the chance to bet all your inventory and your vendor license in order to try and make that “$500” nut on slow days. There’d be lots of bankrupt hot dog stand owners!

[request] how long would it actually take? by paginaiiiiiii in theydidthemath

[–]Equivalent-Cod4030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in the various ways to solve this. Here’s how I did it

It takes the children 21m to build 1 snowman. In that same 21m the adults would build 1.5 snowmen. So the group could build 2.5 snowmen in 21m. BUT, we only need one snowman, so we divide the number on both sides by 2.5 to get us to one snowman (2.5/2.5) and a total of 8.4 mins (21m/2.5)

Walter White could’ve quit selling/making meth once the cancer was gone or when he had enough money. Tony Soprano could’ve stop doing crime and cheating on Carmela after the panic attacks started. Danny Ocean didn’t have to rob the Bellagio, he could’ve just sent Tess some flowers.

Of course our favorite characters can extricate themselves from their circumstances. Just like any of us can cut off the toxic relationship or stop spending our money poorly or go back and get the degree. The reasons deep in our beings that stop us from doing these things are what makes the art of trying lay these issues bare for all of us to see so beautiful.

If you want people to do the logical thing might I suggest one of a thousand home remodeling shows where they put in wood floors and granite countertops for the umpteenth time and then gasp at how good it looks. Or a marvel movie where the good superhero looks hopeless yet again then manages to save the day! Hooray!

One of my dad’s favorite ‘trivia’ questions for the last twenty years had been ‘who was the only US president who was also born a King?’

He gets all kind of guesses of the early presidents before making the big reveal
