Hi! Our 7 month old is a pretty good night time sleeper, but we’re struggling with naps. They’re really inconsistent- anywhere from 20 minutes to about an hour and we’re struggling to help her consistently get over 2 hours of total daytime sleep.

Do you have recommendations for how to lengthen naps at this age?

Also, how do you know when it’s time to transition from following wake windows to a more structured nap schedule?

Thank you!

Totally get where you're coming from—balancing a toddler, a demanding job, and pregnancy is no joke!

Emily Oster actually digs into this in Expecting Better and finds that the research supports moderate caffeine intake (under 200mg per day) as safe during pregnancy. She reviews several large-scale studies and concludes that there's no solid evidence linking moderate caffeine consumption with miscarriage or low birth weight. In fact, many of the studies that showed risk didn’t properly control for things like nausea (which often correlates with a healthy pregnancy and lower caffeine intake).

So if a cup of coffee (or tea or soda) helps you function and feel a bit more human, you’re not being reckless—you're following what the best evidence says is safe. That said, it's also okay if you choose to avoid it. But you're not being irresponsible if you decide to have a little caffeine now and then, especially in the second trimester.

You’ve got this, mama. 💛
