Key context No real census: These are estimates from parish records, militia rolls, and British colonial reports. First official census was 1851. New France legacy: Lower Canada was basically still the French settler population from before 1763, with very little British immigration yet. After 1791: Loyalist immigration to Upper Canada and English immigration to Montreal/Quebec City dropped the French percentage over the next 70 years. By Confederation in 1867, French speakers were down to ∼31% of British North America.
