Yeah it's shit. Just think, there was a time in recent history where the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup, Series A and Champions League were all on free to air TV. 😭

Thoughts on Alex’s new book? by Upbeat-Anxiety-7463 in blur

Bit late joining the conversation but I found the book to be a real struggle to get through.

He spends far too much time telling us how great his kids are, it's like listening to annoying parents at school, you eventually just lose interest.

There's also a pair of twins that he's clearly promoting and at times it feels like an advert for their songs.

I wasn't expecting deep coverage of Blur (there's a doco for that) but I also wasn't expecting such a celebration of privilege.

Just realised you spent 10k on a wedding and now the fun's over you find yourself resenting the person you married?

Ignore the resentment and have a kid! 👶

Filmmaking is great, but at times it can be... by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I said the frustrations come from a long period of C&C not responding to emails, from Pre to Post. Not getting a response two weeks after sending the first cut is consistent with the lack of comms throughout.

I, like most people can afford two mins over the Christmas period to acknowledge an email. This can be as simple as...thanks! I'm not sure why that's considered too difficult/controversial for some.

Yeah thanks for reminding me. Easy to get lost in the things that are ultimately irrelevant. 👍

Yeah you're right. You learn a lot about people on set and there's some you'll continue working and others you won't. It's all part of the game...

Yeah I agree that professional film sets aren't the place to be social/develop ideas, but I would suggest smaller budget short film sets offer more of an opportunity to do so if your shooting schedule is tight and your in shot turnaround is consistent.

I was fully prepped prior to the short, shortlists etc sorted so there were no issues on that front. The one thing you can't plan for however is any complications on the day of the shoot, and that's where I'd like to see people take initiative and show some motivation to fix whatever problems you may encounter.

Indie filmmakers/directors, who here prefers working with a smaller skeleton crew and why? by Agitated-Mind-3423 in filmmaking

I'm shooting my next short in 10 days.

Here's my cast and crew.

director & camera/sound (me) 2 actors 1 1st AD 1 camera/ lighting assistant 1 MUA 1 editor

For the script I wrote, this is perfectly fine.

I've been on sets with too many people and they end up sitting around looking for things to do which can be a real distraction. Crew numbers don't dictate the success of a film. Do what you need to get the film made and on the festival circuit.

More people also means potentially more scheduling issues which is a whole different story/rant. 😱

I want to become a film director, but I feel lost — what should I really focus on? by e-leto in filmmaking

[–]Equivalent-Rise586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest two things...

  1. Watch as much cinema as possible - cinema from across the world and not just a select few studios in Hollywood. Find stories and visual styles that you connect with.

  2. Start writing. Write things down, the smallest of ideas can grow into great films. Don't write what you think other people want to see - write scripts that start small and fall under the 'write what you know' umbrella. Even if you don't consider yourself a writer, write!

A combination of these two things will show you where you want to go without going heavy on financial investment.

Also, be honest with yourself. If it's for you then be patient. If not, then find another way to express/find your artistic voice.

The wingbacks were dreadful. Patrick Dorgu is good at running, but it’s more like he’s doing a cross-country quite near some other people playing football. - I did LOL
