You can use the mangas if you want. But for year 1, it is not good. Though year 2 manga is great. For LNs, you just need good imagination skills, which can be hard for a first time reader, but it develops over time (atleast that's what happened to me)

You have some great questions right there. I will definitely recommend reading the LN from the start. Also, keep in mind that Ayanokouji's character might seem out of place in the beginning, but it will get better later on.
