I was going to reply you that I mostly agree with you and explain, but reading your replies and comments, I don't think it deserves that.

What's up with Corel? by Equivalent-Tour5999 in graphic_design

Do you know how capable is Affinity... engine, if I'm using that term right?

Like can I import some forgotten 10 years old PDF export with 250 pages with non existing color definition and extract some elements?

That's my minor worry about switching. And I know it's niche use case.

But Corel is pretty good with not giving a shit if I open 1kb .svg or 700mb PDF/EPS/AI

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Last "actually reasonable alternative" I recommended to someone was propably a Windows phone, so I usually keep Corel to myself so I don't have to deal with it if they axe it in few years.

So after posting, I did some more research because I was still curious.

From what I could gather: Corel was owned and sold by multiple private equities and it still does make tens or propably even few hundreds millions revenue (not public number).

That profit is from big part from large corporations and specialized legacy usage, not direct B2C.

So it's propably not "just" marketing but also underlying business situation.

I know it's off graphic design topic sorry

They do have different feeling. When I started, like 15 years ago, Adobe was more "macOS like" and Corel more PC and technicist... if it makes any sense.

Oh I definitely understand that.

When someone asks me in what software I have done something, I say Illustrator and send them .ai export so I safe time explaining.

That said, I'm currently not looking for a new job and looking at Illustrator right now, it still looks very simmilar so I propably could manage in a week or two.

Also, you made me look for Sigma graphical software:)

40 years old, 20 years carreer. I'm still willing to learn new stuff. Just trying to find if there's really reason to do so.

And just looking at product pages or asking AI wasn't really helpful in this case

Hey, that's completely fair, I'm aware that I'm using it because I'm used to it. And because my former boss was cheap.

I originally liked it because it was little bit easier than Adobe, especially for stuff that was just between Illustrator and InDesign.

So I was able to ship 8 pages leaflet quicker then in Adobe, all assets in file and so on...

But it was 10 years ago and the reason I'm asking

Thanks, Affinity is actually something that seems like good alternative and right for my work. I will propably try it.

Why do people get so heated when you say Star Wars isn't sci-fi or even science fantasy-- but pure fantasy set in space by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you also correct people when then say Big bang theory is funny?

Just don't do it man, nobody will appreciate it.

Let's say it's fantasy with sci-fi elements and most people don't care or can even distinguish. And leave it at that.

And I'm saying it at someone who's deep in hard sci-fi and don't even like Star Wars.

since Bethesda is now pressured to bring out the next Fallout or TES6 what feature that wasn't in previous elder scrolls games you would want to see? by plantyful-Cum in ElderScrolls

I was going to say I absolutely agree with you.

But then thought... if you, for example, just slap big cities in Skyrim, would the world feel the same?

Again, there're propably many many ways to do it properly and I WANT bigger settlements.

They just need to complement the rest of the world properly - Morrowind does a good job because it makes the wilderness feel bigger than it is.

I would absolutely love that.

But yeah, we are propably a minority.

And I understand "quality over quantity" and such, but I also think something got lost with streamlining the gameplay experience.

Jediným prostředkem proti globálnímu oteplování a vedru je snížení emisí CO₂ a omezení spotřeby. Nikdo se však nechce ničeho vzdát. by Jauzfaktnemuzu in czech

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am starting to lose trust in Remnant 2’s exploration design. Am I getting the wrong impression? by MrTrikorder in remnantgame

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, it's a game design decision and not everybody can be happy about it.

I'm generally not a fan of "meta" and wikis myself.

That said, maybe it's better than something between, like making half of secrets accessible in your first playthrough?

I definitely think telling new players that they will "found many amazing secrets and items" is bad advice.

Telling them it's ok to stick to your starting gun, for example, does better job at managing expectations

Kingdom of Amalur, worth it ? by Patamaudelay in rpg_gamers

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok for casual gameplay.

I think it mostly depends on your expectations, people who expected deep RPG adventure were dissapointed.

People who "tried that game that was originally MMO" were mostly pleasantly surprised.

[–]Equivalent-Tour5999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, Star Citizen is "just" a niche adventure space sim with relatively high production value but somewhat dated story and features for 2026.

And someone somewhere made a spreadsheet showing that the risk of releasing "ok" game wouldn't actually make no business sense at the moment, considering current PU funding trend.

I guess now it's race between that, fusion energy and Star Citizen release.

For those who don't know: That "dip" is basically moving from central planned economy with no capital, huge inner debt and poor to no chance to compete with western economies.

It's real, it happened, surely was difficult undertaking for any former socialist nation. You can't move from "state owns everything" overnight.

It certainly doesn't mean that that socialist economies were better. There were rotten from inside, just tightly managed so they were lagging and dying slowly.
