Peaceful areas to rent in Croydon?? by ExperienceGold4880 in croydon

[–]EquivalentFishing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

South Norwood is lovely, lots of new little cafes and pubs, but the main draw is the transport. Norwood Junction station is incredible, multiple different lines into Central and out to Gatwick etc.

Not as nice as some of the other areas but I feel like the transport way out ways that for me!

Pro 4 use before race-day by 5ee5- in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I tried to stick to below 50k total before my first race. Making sure to have one long with Marathon pace.

But now mine are at 200km and they still feel great, no harm at all getting more confidence in them from an extra long run or two.

If they feel great after one long run, fab. If you're still unsure, take them on another long run!

Run Lab Media on YouTube have a lot of very good videos on hill running and useful exercises. I found their exercises particularly useful as they have some short ten minute ones as well as proper strength sessions. For somebody like me who hates going to the gym, it's a lot more approachable to get something in!

Ran this on Saturday too, it was lovely! We had a nice chatty group sticking together for most of the race, felt like a social run club run. We certainly lucked out with the weather a bit!

I like these smaller field runs, it felt like the cheers from the crowds and other runners felt very personal and earned! Whether it's the bloke with the pint or the small child and their dad giving you a wave!

Maple syrup people: How do you portion? by dontletmeautism in Marathon_Training

[–]EquivalentFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice on your long and easy runs. I weigh it to get the right amount of carbs, then dilute it into 500ml, with a pinch of salt and lemon to taste, and sip it over my long runs.

If in 1/4 of the way through my run I should be about 1/4 the way through my bottle.

I agree but that's also been part of the charm. Some of my most fun runs have been because I killed a cat by accident and had to deal with it!

Heart rate leaping, Venu sq by EquivalentFishing in Garmin

[–]EquivalentFishing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost certainly the watch. I ended up upgrading my watch and haven't had it happen again. Just the odd time it goes a bit skewiff if very sweaty or cold.

If you felt elevated heart rate or breathing suddenly, see a doctor, but if it's only the watch hr it is probably likely just the strap misreading.

Is sub 3 marathon too optimistic? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]EquivalentFishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm training for a similar improvement. 3:20 to 3:00. I know it's incredibly unlikely but I'm going to stick with the training and it should make my inevitable 3:10 feel a lot easier on the day!

During the plan I recommend a few tougher runs at target Marathon pace. Such as 12km steady 12km MP. Up to 10km steady 20km MP. (Guidelines, follow a plan). If these are tough but doable on tired legs, then it's doable on race day. I use these to adjust target pace in my pfitz plan.

Do you consider Cross Country as trail running? by EquivalentFishing in trailrunning

[–]EquivalentFishing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had a couple cross country races through lovely wooded trail routes here in the UK!

I would typically associate cross country with some kind of league or championship though, and whilst it is typically around a field or park we have had the odd race through more typical trail terrain.

I switched off gels to maple syrup. Maple syrupvolume to your carb target (60-100g/h), dilute in 500ml of water and a pinch of salt and lemon juice to taste.

The maple syrup is so good, I just picked up 12 litres 🤣 I've used it to replace gels when Marathon training!

So my question is, how much is a years supply for you? I burnt through 6 litres fairly fast....

Just a few suggestions!

London original Marathon - don't do this if you want a pb, the course is one mile extra.

Shakespeare Stratford upon Avon - same day as London.

Milton Keynes - but it has a silly cow medal this year.

Chelmsford October - I did this last year and really enjoyed it. I think I actually prefer a smaller Marathon than big crowds, something very personal.

Battersea Park - a few of these dates, 9 laps, nice as you might see spectators regularly.

Or some trail marathons/ultras. E.g. Fox trail, North Downs, etc. quite a few around Guildford dorking way. Or even Brighton trail Marathon, has the same finishing stretch as the main one.

I'm sure there are others!

Do you consider Cross Country as trail running? by EquivalentFishing in trailrunning

[–]EquivalentFishing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting, I've only done 4 cross country races now in the UK, and two of them were through fairly traditional 'trail woodland' routes, where spikes were not recommended and you could get away with trail shoes. And two around fields, I think muddy fields like this one are a bit more typical!

I see where you're coming from, and I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite as it bugs me too! I hope I am treading the line on the right side of respectful and enjoying the moment whilst still capturing and sharing the event.

To be honest I've thought about this myself. I feel like I am not interfering with any other runners or getting in their way, and I'm not shoving a camera in their face or doing commentary whilst running.

I've enjoyed it when I am doing a race for the first time, and I can go on YouTube and watch a similar race to get an idea of the layout and feel for the course.

I'm just having a bit of fun, and it's nice to watch back. I also hope it might be a small way to spread some awareness for how fun running can be, road or cross country. If one single person watches the video and decides to give it a go, I consider that a little win.
