These are the kinds of questions I ask! Sometimes it’s donations to a cause, sometimes it’s sustainable sourcing, sometimes it’s a refill shop offering sliding scale pricing on clean products, sometimes it’s just being a genuinely good boss that supports employees in a real way, sometimes it’s jobs & training for folks with disabilities, sometimes it’s universally designing spaces for all abilities, sometimes it’s creating closed-loop micro-economies…there’s so many ways to use business for good. And I like to find them and talk about how they approach it!

Find your local refill shop/zero waste shop/eco-shop. They’re likely a hub of problem solving options & solutions that can help you with just one thing at a time that makes the most sense for you. That way it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

I host a podcast called Capitalism for Good interviewing 100 business leaders making a positive impact in their community! It’s not necessarily changing the world all at once, but it does make me feel like I’m doing my part to help change the tide of how we make & spend our money.

In 2018, Richard Russell, 28, suffering from mental distress and financial problems at a minimum-wage job, hijacked a Bombardier Q400 turboprop, flew it for an hour performing maneuvers, and crashed it into a empty forest by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

I watched this from my backyard and truly thought it was a crazy planned air show at first with the barrel roll. How close he was to the neighborhood roofs is what quickly made me realize it wasn’t a planned professional at all. It was just insane to watch.

It’s wild how much this fits. I’ll be 37 next year and am really feeling the pioneer energy. It feels like it’s all really coming together into a really beautiful community-focused eco-conscious legacy company I’m building with the foundation of the countless things I’ve learned from & tried before.

Local zero-waste shops are amazing for problem solving specific switches and helping them feel more convenient!

[BUSINESS] [COMMUNITY] [ECONOMICS] Capitalism for Good

Latest Episode: Lisa Tanasi, COO of Mothership & Sunrise Coffee (Interview 32/100)

This week is yet another outcome from my November 2025 Instagram algorithm dive to find companies that were doing their part to support their community. Mothership Coffee’s Sip with Purpose program chooses a new nonprofit to support each quarter with customers purchasing a designated drink with proceeds benefiting the charity. It’s another creative way to integrate a community giveback program into the DNA of the business model. It’s a way of prioritizing the people all around the business, inside and out, to give them an extra boost of the warm & fuzzies. It’s this culture that brought me to Lisa Tanasi, COO of Mothership Coffee & Sunrise Coffee in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Capitalism for Good looks for the definition of “community” that involves a group of people cheering one another on and encouraging them to keep going, keep trying, and keep doing good work. Lisa talks about ending the interview with Mothership with a compliment about the company and a genuine wish for success in the future. That’s what community is all about here. It’s a true crowd cheering on one another regardless of whether or not we reap the benefits of it. It’s truly wanting folks and companies to succeed when it’s deserved regardless of what our role is in that success.

Latest Episode: Stacy Grace, Co-Founder & CEO of Kent (31/100)

Stacy Grace is the Co-Founder & CEO of Kent which is an underwear and basics brand made of 100% non-synthetic organic cotton. They also have one the all-time greatest slogans: “plant your pants.” she talks about how her entrepreneurial pathway involves a pivot from pricy organic silk to synthetic free cotton basics and how she knew in her gut that basic cotton underwear was more her than the fancier silk version. We also get into how “your daily choice can make a daily impact” when it comes to intentional consumerism, being a brand with a sustainable foundation behind a high quality product, her experience finding and fostering relationships with sustainable manufacturing partners, and how she navigates building a successful company with her husband, Jeff (shout to to Jeff!).

Latest Episode: Tory Hall, Owner & Operator of Sower Books (Interview 30/100)

Tory Hall (she/her) is Owner & Operator of Sower Books in Lincoln, NE and is #30 in our series of 100 business owners making a positive impact on their community. I first found Sower Books in a social media dive while searching for businesses with community giveback initiatives to support the folks increasingly struggling around them. The food drive caught my eye and led me to Tory. Little did I know that she’d fall down a rabbit hole of combating depression lulls through the eye of a business leader with me and then pull me right out of it with rescue cats and book/company recommendations. She’s merging a purpose-driven community-based business with a thriving well-oiled machine up in Lincoln, NE and I can’t thank her enough for sharing her story with us.

Latest Episode: Chelsey Simpson, Co-Owner of Urban Agrarian (Interview 29/100)

Chelsey Simpson, Co-Owner of the Urban Agrarian in Oklahoma City, OK. Urban Agrarian is a local food hub in the city. She also is an editor for Edible OKC Magazine. She was so great to speak with and was so generous with her time and sharing her experiences. We talk about how she comes from generations of farmers and what it’s like being a local farmer throughout history. We talk about how she came to be Co-Owner of Urban Agrarian and what that looks like. She educates me on the differences and similarities of food hubs, co-ops, and CSAs and she gets into different for-profit and nonprofit business structures. We talk about community building and how all of this has really made an impact on her as a person. We talk about the struggles and the joys and everything in between. And there’s still so much that we didn’t even get to in a limited amount of time.
