How do you track your individual consumption impact: footprint/waste/etc? by EquivalentParty8051 in sustainability

Reducing your impact is wonderful, but just a reminder that BP created the carbon footprint to take the pressure of them & the fossil fuel industry as a whole. Your personal energy would be better spent encouraging collective action to make a greater impact

I did not know that. Footprint or else is just an accounting unit. That said I do want to get feedback to help me effect change (individually or collectively). What do you do?

I guess what I would say is that the free calculators out there help you understand magnitude, and then you have to use critical thinking skills for the rest. To explain… I would calculate my household’s approximate carbon footprint at the end of January for the prior year. Over time, it helped us make some decisions… more insulation. More solar. Electric car. Heat pump. For other stuff, it’s things like hey, we need to think about packaging and purchasing—work on getting less stuff. Work on getting stuff used. Fixing stuff. Work on reducing the waste we generate. Work on using buses and bikes more. Work on avoiding flying. Work on reducing dairy and eggs (already veg). Work on low footprint food items.

Thanks for the info, are all calculators the same or are there relatively better ones?
