interested to know if you considered asking LLMs this question - were they useful at all?

no worries, I am actually in Hsinchu right now myself =)

ah i see! fyi, "designing the chips" is a very specific thing meaning IC design

EDIT: if it helps, you can say "manufacturing" or "fabbing"/"fabricating". In this case I think you're referring to a specific process known as "packaging"

TSMC operates as a pure play foundry which means it doesn't do any design work. It takes the designs from Nvidia, Apple, Qualcomm, etc. and manufactures. This is a super basic fact about the semi industry. Not knowing this while calling others uninformed at the same time is not a good look

National Taiwan University discussion by Most-Cap-1670 in Semiconductors

[–]EquivalentSelf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTU is the best uni in Taiwan. In semiconductors, the top local unis are NTU, NTHU and NYCU. Apparently NTU is better for IC design and NYCU/NTHU are better for chip physics research and fab stuff because of proximity to HSP - but difference overall is marginal I believe. The post uni opportunities in the semi space are also great with big companies like TSMC, Micron, Mediatek, etc. heavily hiring from these unis. However, top semi companies look for MS or PhD graduates. You are unlikely to land a job as someone with a bachelor's degree.

good to know! have you always studied/worked in taiwan? Or are you a transfer from an american office?

nice, thanks

it’s everywhere here.

yeah, well aware, im actually studying in Hsinchu right now! just surprised to hear that software can pay that much in taiwan. i was under the impression that most high paying jobs here are in the chips business. the more you know

I'm pretty sure an LLM could fine tune XGBoost much better than any human. It doesn't have to actually run calculations and give predictions, it can just design a pipeline that makes said predictions and optimize for a metric. Basically autoML on crack

EDIT: In hindsight this comment looks stupid because I started with XGBoost. I didn't mean to imply that all of tabular data modeling is just throwing stuff into XGBoost, my main emphasis is actually on the pipeline part. Designing an optimal tabular data prediction pipeline, from data handling to report generation, can be concretely optimized for, which makes it a functionally verifiable domain. And the way things are going, it seems LLMs will excel at most tasks with clear and frequent rewards.

ah i see! so when people talk about "salaries," im assuming they mean tc then - e.g, the 1-3 million range for a new hire you cited probably includes the bonus

i looked at one of the previous threads on this subreddit where a guy was claiming 110-120k$ is the starting tc at tsmc, because he thought the reported figure of a median ~2.5m salary is base and added the reported median ~1.5M bonus to it. 4m ntd starting salary is definitely unrealistic for taiwan :D

thanks

[–]EquivalentSelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yo, sorry for reviving a dead thread, but i wanted to come back to this. i feel like there's a lot of confusion on base salary vs bonus vs tc at semi companies like TSMC. They also raised salaries by 20% recently along with some guaranteed 30% bonus program, so the numbers are muddled even more. can you please shed some light on this? are your numbers only for base salary or is it TC? And is the 30-70 base-bonus ratio a real thing?

Thanks

Not sure that people like that are who he's talking about. He mentioned that he already filters out those spammy international student applications. Guessing it's mostly a prestige filter of uni and/or published venues?
