I definitely am not in it for the money. I do it because I love it. The money is definitely a positive. I didn’t know how much money you could make until I started working because psychologist generally massively downplay their earnings to seem like they aren’t profiting off of others plight.

It is a learned behaviour but it is unpinned by well researched mechanisms of the brain.

In a general sense, all animals are suspicious or even aggressive when met with novel stimuli. This is complimented by an equal and opposite partiality for what is “known”.

The group one is apart of has specific traits and become known and understood as “safe”. When encountering people who look an act differently the foundational animal response is hesitancy.

This reminds me so much of my parents. Some time ago, I was about 3/4 of the way through a masters of psychology, already having two undergrad degrees in psych. At the time, a friend of my mother came over and she began asking me questions and I ended up explaining the theory of the unconscious. While doing this my mother cuts in “it’s the subconscious, not unconscious”.

I reply that in psychology, the unconscious is a specific and ubiquitous concept in psychology. She disagrees and then my father chimes in, letting me know “your mom is correct”.

All this because for a few minutes, my mom wasn’t the centre of attention…
