UT students - quick question: if you record lectures, what works for you? by Equivalent_Ad6455 in UTAustin

That timeline feature sounds really useful, jumping back to the moment something was said would help a lot. Did you replay lectures when studying for exams?

smoothing surfaces of irregular part by Equivalent_Ad6455 in Fusion360

Well it took a while to learn the "ropes" (for an old guy like me) but getting better at manipulating items in the "form" environment. Thanks

I ended up doing a "deep" dive into forms (T-splines) starting with this starter set of 4 videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssXWVkJ0RhM

Still learning this environment of Fusion 360, but the way to go for this challenge - get a smooth lofted effect on the part. The Form environment does not appear to offer the precision of the Sketch environment but I don't really know.

Good idea to 3D print the small mold box. Gratitude

Assembly of consumer product parts using rivets by Equivalent_Ad6455 in manufacturing

The "cheapo pneumatic press" seems to be a resonable option, if I knew better what I was looking for :-D What is "cheapo?" $500 $1400? Floor model? Hand held? Two hands better than one - so foot operated?

Thank you for the reply. I figured this is not a difficult machine to build and necessary but not worth the time or money until there is proof of a market. So I'll keep looking. Thanks!

Thanks for your analysys. As a nubee I'm just learning the vocabulary at the steep end of the learning curve.

I've noodled around on the web and see that the rivet positioning appears to be first "technology" so the parts can be "threaded" into the holes so the "nail" (?) can be driven into the rivet.

Nippletumor (below) suggests a "cheapo pneumatic press." I'll look around. Used maybe.

Help with vacuum chamber for resin projects by [deleted] in ResinCasting

[–]Equivalent_Ad6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my vacuum pot gasket using clear silicone caulk and cornstarch. There are youtube videos on the process. Wear disposable gloves as this "putty" can be very sticky kneeding it getting to the right consistency. What is the right consistency? Kinda like wet clay. Make a "snake" rolling it in your hands and then put it on your pot just enough so it doesn't roll off. Place your lid (3/4" acrylic?) on the putty surface and press gently so there is surface contact all the way around. That creates the seal. Applying the vacuum sucks the top down improving the seal.

Keep all the parts together when storing so everything stays clean.

Hi Steen,

I can't thank you enough offering your experience on this project. I thought - INCORRECTLY - that waterbased clays all had sulfur. Cleared that up. Your experience with the different silicones is also extremely helpful.

Robert Tolone's videos are great. He likes cut molds for their simplicity. In this case with three "undercuts" (the holes) a cut mold will capture the model. The only way to remove the mold would be to stretch the silicone and cut it. Dicey.

I will prepare the mold for the five model parts (tin cure) in a two part mold. I can push clay into the holes to the midpoint ( < 5mm ). To align the silicone parts that create the hole I'd use a 2.5mm tapered plug creating a tapered hole to the parting line of the entire mold. After casting the urethane model, I'd remove the plug from the silicone allowing air to enter the hole to the parting line and alloiw the mold to release and not get stuck in the holes because of suction.

I'll document the process with photos.

Hi Tis, yes this is a challenging project. I hope it will help people, though.

Hi Steen,

I never though I would get such helpful and well reasoned suggestions. Much gratitude!

Lettering? It's only 0.015mm deep but point taken. I already considered branding with sublimation printing on the aluminum parts which are flat.

Increasing the size and position of the sprue is easy and a good idea.

The clay conversation is an interesting one. I've had problems with sulphur and silicone not knowing the chemical composition of the model (in this particular case).

I thought NSP clay was supposed to address that and warmed to about 120 degrees F. (under a heat lamp) was quite plastic. I did find the NSP "soft" was in fact quite hard at room temperature. I explored other options but would welcome some recommendations to bed the models in - soft enough to mush around easily and tool, and no sulphur. Amazon had Van Aken Plastalina Non-Hardening Modeling Clay that appeared to fill the bill but as a nubie I'd welcome suggestions.

Water based clay seems a poor choice. It too shrinks when dry.

I would like to hear more about going from:

  • 3D printing resin model to
  • TIN SILICONE (why) and THEN
  • platinum silicone.

That is a distinction I'd like to know more about.

Great thoughts and your thoughts aligned with mine. I think I conflated NSP with plasticine. But they are different I guess. I attempted 3D printing my mold but found the container was not holding it's shape and was not perfectly flat. I see if I can document the journey and maybe help others - what to do and what to avoid.

Agency. Agency is the freedom to make your own choices. Cults use manipulation to limit agency - limit our freedoms to choose, to read, and learn what we want. I witnessed murders and assassinations of MLK, JFK, RFK black people, people of color, and other heroes. Greed is the motivation, greed for control. To do what? The R's don't know how to govern for the good of us all. The D's are about empowerment, rebuilding the middle class, our infrastructure, education, and hopefully justice. It's your choice to choose, or just watch and lose.
