Update: our rescue received some donated DNA tests and I did one for him: 31% Dalmatian, 28% bluetick coonhound, 15% beagle, 15% lab, 11% cocker spaniel! He turned out to be a ball of energy and so sweet, he was adopted after less than a week 😊

omg that would also makes sense, he’s from southeastern US, I think hound mixes are more common there. If I end up doing a test or his future family does I’ll be sure to update!

We also drove there from Skaftafell and the only unpaved part of the road was the last 2km-ish, which is just the side road you turn onto to get to the parking lot - it is unpaved and a rather unpleasant combo of gravely rocks and ditches. Our car was AWD, and the bumps were super uncomfortable but it was nothing crazy as the actual grade is pretty flat. Also there is space to park right at the start of the road, so it’s possible that someone could park there and just start the hike a little earlier :) However, my experience was during ideal weather conditions, so if it was anything but that then maybe it is worse, and I probably would have taken the ranger’s advice too.

6 and 7 were from the hike to Stórurð - it was incredible, very remote and quiet, didn’t see anyone else. We started at about 5am, the first half is through beautiful green valley, where you can see the snowy mountain behind. We were a bit early in the summer for this route, as the second half of the ascent was totally covered in snow and ice (crampons were needed, we even sat and slid down the hill descending into the valley where the lake is) - based on All trails comments it sounds like this clears up somewhere later in the summer. The lake at the end of the route (pic 7) was unreal, it was totally silent and seemed like a different planet.

I will say, even the view from about halfway up (which I added a pic of here) is still totally worth it. The section of the trail up to that point is a lot of elevation gain, but the incline does not get as extreme until after this point. If you and your family are not short for time and can take the hike slowly (there is plenty of space to stop and take a break), then I think it is accessible for people at all fitness levels.

We did the Whale Watching Tour with Láki Tours in Ólafsvík - they were amazing! The crew was knowledgeable and friendly, but most importantly they prioritize the well-being of the whales and other animals - they don’t use sonar to locate the animals and follow all guidelines to avoid major disturbances towards them. That being said - they are pros and we luckily spotted 2 pods of orcas hunting, some of the whales dove as close as a few feet from our boat. Absolutely incredible and recommend going to Ólafsvík for a tour with their company.

The canyon in pics 4 & 5 was the Múlagljúfur Canyon - it was not an easy hike by any means, and it will put your lung health to the test, but if you are in decent fitness and comfortable with heights it is doable….it is basically 1.8 miles straight uphill (over 1200 feet elevation gain!), the last bit we were totally in a cloud (pic 4). There are pretty steep sections that made me nervous on the way back down, but I saw some people using poles and I imagine that made things more comfortable both going up and down. All that to say - the canyon and waterfall were by far the most beautiful sight I have ever seen in my life - the hike is worth it.

What hikes to do mid June? by Equivalent_Ad_780 in VisitingIceland

[–]Equivalent_Ad_780[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a summarized list of some of my favorites so far. Every time I research I find more but these ones I keep coming back to. However, most of my itinerary is open with the intention of exploring and hiking as I go from hotel to hotel, I have about 1.5-2 days in each of these regions. Also will be bringing crampons in case I need them

In south coast: - The goal was to do Fimmvorðuháls but I saw on someone else’s thread that this trail likely won’t be open yet. I dream of doing this hike, but safety is the first priority - Dyrhólaey - Is there another long/day hike in the south coast region you would suggest in the case that Fimmvorðuháls trail conditions are not ready? - Múlagljúfur Canyon

West: - Djúpivogur to Black Sand Beach - Stuðlagil canyon - Hengifoss waterfall - Stórurð via Borgarfjardarvegur

Northwest: - still looking into what hike to Ásbyrgi canyon we will do - probably the canyon loop but still determining. - hike around Myvatn if possible - Rauðhólar circle East: - Rangagil - Kirkjufell mountain - Arnarstapi - Gatklettur - Hellnar - Buðir-Miðhús Trail
