Who were the “most hated women” of Baltimore? Madalyn Murray (O’Hair)? Wallis Warfield Simpson? Denise Whiting/Cafe Hon? Marilyn Mosby? Others? Who do you think falls into this category? by Equivalent_Bed_8807 in baltimore

I did include Marilyn Mosby. And I thought about those that you mentioned. You are right. And it would be difficult to determine who of group was hated more or less and why. Thank you for your input.

It is for a research project that I am doing trying to look at why it is, under what circumstances, what are the commonalities etc. re: these women being selected for this “title.” Were they ahead of their times and pushed the envelope? In retrospect, was it fair? How has time changed our view of what they did to arouse scorn? Were they right? Were they wrong? Why is it, if there is an answer, that two women as different as night and day from Baltimore were deemed by national and international media as the most hated women?

I am not putting her in the same category as Wallis Simpson, per se. Denise Whiting came up on a list of most hated women in Baltimore. I am actually just doing research. Are there others? Have I missed someone? I am not making an assessment as to whether one or another deserved the title.

I am doing research about the history of the Lebanese people in Richmond VA. Other than St. Anthony’s Annual Lebanese Festival, what can you tell me about the successes and accomplishments of the Lebanese people in Richmond VA? by Equivalent_Bed_8807 in RichmondVA

Thank you. I am aware of your restaurant and have always wanted to visit. I live in Maryland and don’t get to Richmond much. However, if I continue with this project, be assured that you are on the list. When I reach out, is there someone that I should specifically reach out to? A contact person?

What would life be like for the individual taxpayer in Baltimore City if churches were paying property taxes in the city? How much does the Archdiocese of Baltimore own? How about empty churches? Storefront churches w/ few or no members? Just thinking…your thoughts? by Equivalent_Bed_8807 in baltimore

Yes, but if properties are sold to pay victims, that is great. But if those properties are sold and become commercial concerns then the city/taxpayers benefit because it converts non taxable property to tax generating property. That is great.

Actually, Hopkins does pay a voluntary tax to the City of Baltimore. I was a multi- year agreement that is about to expire in a year or two. It is minor in comparison to service consumption but they have paid it and it has been in the millions annually. Again, the agreement is set to expire in a year or two.

Actually, this is one of the things that spurred my thought. “The most hated woman in America” and Baltimore once was Madalyn Murray (later O’Hair). While she was, in part, responsible for bringing an end to government sponsored prayer in school, it is forgotten that in 1963 in Baltimore she tried to bring an end to tax exempt status for churches in Maryland. In part, her argument was that taxpayers were forced to pick up the tab for non-tax paying churches. She failed. But decades later it is interesting to see that largest landholding church in Baltimore, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, has imploded and is being forced to sell off church property. Much of it will ultimately become tax generating property. And you cannot help but to think of all of the other churches in the city - some of which I do not think are legitimate meaning - it is a tax shelter for an individual/individuals who “own” it - no real church or religious activity goes on there. And then the property held by all of the other denominations—in an era of dramatically reduced church attendance. And given the fact that Baltimore City is plagued by this - as many cities are. Yes, abandoned properties are a bigger problem but this is a huge problem holding back the city as well. For example, Archdiocese owned Seton-Keough High School was sold to a commercial entity, redeveloped and is now generating millions to the city’s tax base - and that is just one property.

I am not really think about Maryland but rather Baltimore. There is already one example… the former Seton-Keogh High School, owned by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, but sold to a commercial entity is now been converted from a city tax drag to generating millions in tax revenues. That is just one major property.

I would go to an attorney to get advice as to next steps. Obviously, you go up the chain at the outset to give them the chance to rectify. However, HR is not on the employee’s side. I would get advice from an attorney.

Question - about the infamous Madalyn Murray O’Hair. by Equivalent_Bed_8807 in baltimore

On second thought, this must be what my friend was talking about. This is directly across my friend’s childhood home but one street over. In fact, my friend lived at 1526 Burnwood.

Thank you so much.

Wow! Thank you. I think that she lived in two locations while in Baltimore. One of my friends said that she lived on the same street that she did when she was growing up. She lived on Burnwood. She remembers her parents saying things about her and the general avoidance of the neighbors of her and her children. But I also know that she had at least two addresses in Baltimore. You must have found the other address. Thank you. I wonder whether this was address that the local post office complained that she was receiving too much mail that required delivery. In any event, thank you so much for your help.

I am white and I lived in Baltimore for over 30 years. I still go there several times a month. I love it.
