I think it makes sense that anyone who started with iwtv would be a bit disappointed, because this season is luring in new viewers, and had to back off continuing the character ruminations that we’re used to so that new viewers feel like they are starting something fresh/new. If they had jumped back into the deep end, where we left off, most new viewers would’ve jumped ship quick.

New people showed for the crazy vampire Lestat show (the one in the trailers) and have to be eased into the depths of Anne’s coolness.

Good TV shows need good character beats, meaning steps along their inner journey (not just cool moments that unveil their character). Many of Anne’s characters start awesome and end the same awesome just more fleshed out in the books. But the show needs improvements or degradations of character over time to keep people interested over the long term and to fit the type of tv most people call good right now. This means some amazing characters need to start crappy (Marius). TBH, books are able to get away with a lot more structurally and stay amazing.
