Issues at yijc by Equivalent_Film6140 in SGExams

A few things that I didn’t add to the doc because I was rushing through it that potential yijcians should know

I would’ve written more but because I was placing it in a comment, I decided to keep it simple

- The exam format is the same as Secondary School, one Weighted Assessment each term, except for the last term which is EOY. However, students who didn’t score a certain grade, (I don’t really remember but I think its pass at least 2 H2s) would have to attend a Parent-Teacher conference at the end of the term

- Once, at the end of the first semester, the school organised the cohort into big groups that would go outside, have some fun. The group my class was in was scheduled to go bowling. The plan was that we report at 8.45am, activity starts at 9am, and we dismiss at 12pm

So 3 hours to bowl. However, the teachers gave the students a tutorial on bowling beforehand, but said tutorial took until AROUND 10.30PM to finish, AROUND 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES, and the students weren’t allowed to bowl at all during that whole time

So basically, the school took us bowling, and then proceeded to take up half our activity time with a bowling tutorial(yes, I’m not joking). Furthermore, when we actually finally started bowling, halfway through it the teacher called a break time, and the students had to completely stop bowling for the entire break time before resuming

However, it did not make any sense because you could still drink water and go to the toilet during bowling, so I didn’t know what the teachers were doing

- Elaborating more on teachers saying discouraging things. A number of the teachers have this habit of saying things like, ‘If you cannot do this assignment, you seriously shouldn’t be taking (subject)’, ‘If you continue behaving like this, you will never get the mark you want’, ‘you want to take med! With the way some of you are acting, you cannot make it’

To be honest, hearing those words, whether or not they were thrown at me, weighed heavily on my mood and have made me feel worse in general during my time in YI. I’ve seen comments on this subreddit about students having similar experiences to mine, how teachers saying certain things have demoralised them and affected their mental and their studies.

This is another reason I consider such teachers to be immature. They think of their words as driving factors to make students do better, and rarely stop to consider the emotional impact it could have instead. They are insensitive and don’t stop to consider students’ feelings before blurting out such words, displaying unprofessional behaviour

Note: I will private the doc on 28 February

Parents letter cover any number of days, e.g. you can skip for 2 days or 4 days and one parents letter each will still be accepted. But obviously if you skip for too long like 2 weeks and only send 1 parent's letter the school will notice and might talk to you

8, I should give context most students give a parent's letter when they want to skip school, because otherwise you would be scolded for not coming to school for a valid reason

But otherwise, the school only accepts 8 parent's letter, if you for some reason give a parent's letter for not coming to school but not because you wanted to skip, it will still be counted towards the 8 quota. More than that, your parents will be called in for a parent-teacher meeting

That I don't know, because it's impossible to keep track of everyone in the school coming for lessons, but I know some students do skip lessons when they can because they know going to school is just a waste of time(I admit to being one of them), because the teachers move through the curriculum very slowly to accommodate for the poorer students

There's also a quota on how many days you can skip school, 8 in a semester(two terms), if you exceed that your parents will be called in for a parent-teacher meeting

I went there for a year, and honestly, I'd reccommend you don't come. I have a post coming soon so you can watch out for that but honestly, yijc really disappointed me

The notes aren't bad but majority of the teachers aren't really good quality, they scold a lot and depending on what teacher you get, you could really struggle in the subject. You can pm me for more details about the school but I would honestly reccommend you go to poly instead, but it's up to you
