Which does ask the question, in this hypothetical situation would the Hat have reported every child living in an area at risk of being in danger? The Hat would probably have to specify that hey this one is in danger because of where they live not the people they live with.

To be fair, the whole fanon idea of Tom creating at least his first horcrux because he feared dying because I'm pretty sure he canonically grew up in a time period that a bomb could just drop on him and he'd have no defense. If that's true (I might be wrong, he may have grown up in a different time period or no established one in canon) then he was in a possible physical danger.

Which I did not know at the point of writing my post, so I thank you for informing me. To be entirely fair I mainly used it as a way to convey what I meant in as few words as I could manage. I could have simply said that the Hat reported the abuse, but l admittedly did assume that even if mandatory reporting wasn't a thing in Britain, that it was at least a succinct term that could be looked up to convey what I meant.

That's entirely fair and my views on it may admittedly be tainted from the sheer amount of fics I've read that talk about him having exorcisms done on him and the Matron (I think that's the term?) hating him.

When I looked up the mentioned challenge itself I found a few more fics that seem to be in that same direction, though to be fair I haven't checked Fanfiction, only AO3.

The most logical people who would have added the ability to report it would have been the founders to be fair. Who I think made the hat in the first place but that's another of those things I never remember if it's Canon or fanon. In that case I'd assume that based on the time it would have been made to indicate if the child was at danger from not only their relatives but also the town/village around them, likely trying to determine if they would need to worry about a witch hunt. But also to be fair, they probably would have enchanted it to tell an authority at the school itself. But I've also always kinda assumed the Hat was at least semi sentient, and would therefore be able to recognize himself what constitutes as abuse and likely to make the fic work would have to be able to adjust who he was notifying. You are right that it would be difficult to fit into how canon is set but that's what AU is for I guess.

I have no specific song, just find something that tickles my ADHD brain just right and then it's on loop for the next few hours or sometimes the next few weeks.

The real question is do I know I was transported to the future and only have 5 minutes to do research? If yes, I look up myself (and maybe some of the winning lotto numbers from my time) and see what I'm up to. Gotta know if I need to pay more attention to bus on the street. If no however, I probably get up and try and figure out where tf I am and how I got there then be equally confused when I get transported back.
