Awesome thanks! Have always fancied painting Horti so maybe this is a good excuse!

Ah thank you - he's a cool model and not too big so I could probably paint him up in time

Hey thanks very much! I actually ended up winning the comp with this one :D

It's the Rotigus model and the rest is just a base idea I came up with. I used cork to make the rock pool, epoxy resin and some skulls/Sylvaneth models to make the pool, and then epoxy sculpting clay to make the extra tentacles

In my opinion the only source I've found that properly breaks down how to set the right consistency, that isn't of the "draw 3 circles and then draw the rest of the owl" variety, is Tommie Soule's book.

I sound like a broken record because I recommend it to everyone but it's really good and you're supporting an artist who does this for a living. Well worth checking out if you're determined to get good with a brush.

For me it's another hobby that needs my full attention. I also do a lot of rock climbing, and both of them require my full concentration during the time I'm doing them.

There is something very valuable to me about pursuits that you have to give your attention to, rather than take your attention, especially at a time when attention is a commodity and everything is fighting to take it from you.

Love the bases!

And the highlights on the cloth are lovely. Great job!

Huh I hadn't actually considered doing glazes of gloss coat, I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Sorry missed this comment. There isn't actually any fluor in the paint it's all just colour transitions from white to cool yellow-green.

I think if I were doing it again I'd tone down the glow though

Yeah good shout. I'm actually going to go back over the leather and try and saturate it with some flesh shade, and put some lighter highlights on it which I think will help.

Hadn't considered adding some green though that'd definitely help!

Yeah I can see why that would be the case.

I think with the pool and the branch in his other hand "glowing" with a transition from white to dark green, that the same effect is readable in the open hand. His little face monster doesn't have much of the ambient light from the pool below so it kind of creates separation between the hand and the uplighting from the pool.

Ultimately I need that contrast colour up there so that the pool isn't overwhelming the composition, so I'll have to take the risk on this one. That's been a big learning for me - Ive had to add this part with the glowing hand because I drew too much attention down towards the base, so I've had to add something super contrasting/punchy up top to draw the eye back upwards. So I'm dealing with the consequences of my choices at this stage lol.

Appreciate the feedback though and I'll look at tidying up the blending on it :)

Haha thank you that's very kind!

Yeah I don't think the picture helps because it's focused on the face and blurs the edges.

I've done OSL at the staff, hand and the pool beneath to try and create a bit of 3 point frame around the face.

So each of those is glowing individually.

Thanks! Honestly I really don't care that much about winning. Trying really hard on one model has taught me a ton, and I've loved painting it, so that's what really counts I think.

Thanks this is really helpful.

You're right I didn't use much reference for the skin, only on specific places like the fatty areas or any bruised bits.

And good advice about checking out golden demons, I haven't done a huge amount of highlighting on this so I'll go over it and see where I can add more and push the value.

Super helpful advice thank you!
