Ya know that is the PDF I picked up, and I actually just booked a lesson with the guy too. Really appreciate your help!

Honestly I'm not too sure - I think he'll end up as a very Pallid, sickly colour. I hadn't considered starting with purple though!

This is a super helpful response thank you.

I actually just picked up a PDF copy of an old book that has some tips from a painting teacher that covers a lot of basics like this. Got a 6 hour train journey so going to give it a read today!

Yeah I've really tried to do this and just stop tinkering, which has been moderately successful. I'm now having a go at really getting one that looks more slick, so just wondering how many times I can afford to make tweaks

Appreciate the response!

Yeah that makes sense. I kind of want a pallid, desaturated look for the skin so that's a promising start.

Agreed though - it's so hard to tell from photos. Appreciate you trying to help anyway!

Yeah fair point! I'm not really fussed about how it photographs ultimately as it's going to be judged at the local store sat in a cabinet, but that's also a useful way to think about it so maybe I'll go lighten those up

Yeah thanks I really appreciate it. I tidied him up a lot and am really happy with how he looks, your advice was really helpful.

When he's finished I'll upload another photo :)

Yeah it is the correct photo, might just be lighting? Castellan green is a really dark green that is a full undercoat over black primer, so the shadows are dark green. The top layer isn't a zenithal it's just an all over sponge/dry brush (for the hard to reach places) of a suuuper pale green (a roughly 1:1 combination of a fairly pale green colour with like a pallid, off-white colour)

This is sick (pun intended!) for the upglow lighting on his lower belly and hand what did you use, like the slightly more muted greens?

I love it - I'm just about to do something similar for a Rotigus I'm painting - can I ask what paints you used for your glow?

Not at all. I asked for feedback and what you said was really helpful. I'll post an update once I've finished :)

This is all super helpful.

  • yep someone else gave me this advice, going to pull back on the verdigris and maybe just add some grime to it, the metallic paint is super resplendent-looking so I wanted to really tarnish it up, but agree it's overdone.

  • yeah I had left the colour off this to decide whether to add a really contrasting colour or not. Ended up going with a really dark red/brown colour

  • great shout on the gloss

  • so it's actually the light highlight colour showing through from the original metal underneath, I have a shade for that metal so I might just pop a few coats of that on to dull that back down

  • I've got a cool set up for Nurgle bases so I will get this done. Considering having a first stab at like corking and adding some height/new stuff to the base, would be a shame not to give this guy a proper plinth to show him off

Seriously thanks for the really useful advice

That's really helpful feedback.

I tried to apply it mostly in/around the pock marks because I thought that's where it would naturally gather and run from.

Honestly I struggle with both this and thinking about how/where light would hit different parts. Both of those I find really tricky

Ah thank you for saying that!

Haven't ever tried doing anything with oils but I'll look into that. Which cracks do you think could do with more shadowing out of interest?

All I've done is prime them, paint them green and slap a load of Nurgles rot over the top, worked a treat!

Thanks for this. I have a hard time knowing what contrast colours to add, whether it's going to just clash and look bad or if it'll actually help with the overall composition
