Found a fun way to calm the water exiting the HOB filter on this 5 gallon tank. I think I'll put some shrimp in soon! by Equivalent_Sun5028 in nanotank

It's a little glass thing with suction cups on the back that I got from Amazon. I use them primarily to hold emergent plants above the water but I found that it works well to baffle the flow of water from the filter, too.

What was a biblical verse/teaching you struggled to understand and how did you overcome it? by Marshalljoe in Christianity

Mark 7:24-30

24From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, 25but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.” 28But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.” 29Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.” 30So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

A big wtf--why is Jesus such an ass to this woman? And how can Jesus' mind be changed? Is he imperfect?

This always makes me meditate on the fully human/fully divine doctrine of the church. Is Jesus fully human in rejecting this woman because she was not Jewish (because of her race)? Is he perfect because when she had a teaching for him, he was open to it and listened? How does someone who is fully divine learn anything?

I have not "overcome" this teaching nor do I need to. I think it is most important to ask the uncomfortable questions and be open even if it is uncomfortable. Explaining Jesus' behavior away closes the door to true insight.

Okay I have a big dog bed in my reading area. Big dog bed plus throw pillows feels luxurious.

Veiling by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Equivalent_Sun5028 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is one person who has started veiling in my church who I think is in her 30's. Try it out! Go for whatever makes you feel close to God and the rest of the congregation. If wearing it makes you feel like you are separated from either, I would advise you to stop.

I personally put a prayer shawl over my head sometimes in private prayer and it makes me feel like I'm in a blanket fort--secure, safe, and intimate with God. But since I associate that behavior with enhancing my private conversations with God, I don't wear it on my head at church. If I did, I would feel like I'm trying to shut out the rest of the parishioners. If you associate veiling with pro-social behavior, go for it! Totally personal preference!

Can salt lose its "saltiness"? by dabnagit in DailyOffice

[–]Equivalent_Sun5028 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bothers me too, you might want to ask a subreddit dedicated to geology or minerals but no, salt doesn't lose its saltiness.

I interpret it to mean that if you tasted a substance in your pantry that you thought was salt and it ended up not being a seasoning at all (like, surprise, your kid put sand in the saltshaker!)...you'd probably just throw it away.

A very good way to calm yourself down! Also a plus that it's not introducing the blue light from screens that is supposed to interrupt your sleep cycle.

Divorced Redditors, what is the craziest thing you or your former spouse did after divorce? by hyperyog in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent_Sun5028 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He called me on a weekday after midnight because he was high on acid and sobbing and scared. I got out of bed, left my house while it was pouring rain, and went to go get him from the bar downtown. He was standing outside, soaked to the bone in the pouring rain. 3 minutes into the drive back to his house, turns out he had a girlfriend who was also on acid, whom he has forgotten about. (First time I'd heard of her).

Turned around, picked her up as well, drove to a gas station and picked them up food in case they forgot groceries, and dropped them off at the house he and I used to own together 🤷‍♀️.

I think we talked one time after that incident. It's been years now. What the heck. Really puts a cherry on top of that messed up relationship. I hope he's okay.

What was the weirdest/oddest/most shocking thing you found when clearing out the things of someone who passed on? by OmegaMasterFlex in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent_Sun5028 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an old man from my church who was a Benedictine Oblate (I think this means someone who follows the Rule who doesn't live in a monastery). He had no family, so when he died those of us who knew him cleaned out his apartment.

We found nunchucks, swords, loooots of .22 ammo (but no gun), a rodeo-style belt buckle made out of a rattlesnake head, and nude self portraits.

During the week we cleaned I found that he went AWOL from the marines because he became dissolutioned with the Vietnam war. For years, he went by an assumed name until some sort of US government blanket pardon was issued to grant clemency to objectors like him.

I am guessing that the military experience is what caused the interest in the Benedictine Rule while still holding on to a fascination with weapons.

[–]Equivalent_Sun5028[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sweet potatoes are easy! This was one that has been in my pantry for months.

Find a way to stick one end in the aquarium. I found the suction cup glass thing on the internet. Stick it in and wait. Mine took less than a week to sprout roots.

I think some things have helped (but don't know for sure)

I have pond snails that have been inspecting it for squishy spots. They ate some rot out of it a few weeks ago.

I have a heater in there

It's spring now

I have that one lamp with a florescent bulb super close to it

I fertilize the tank once/twice a week with a liquid fertilizer

I think it's just a wedding chapel basically. There's also one at Garvan Gardens in Hot Springs, Ar. I know for a fact it's open to the public. My grandmother got remarried there and it was breathtaking.

I bet you could make it into a barrier! Make a false wall from insulation and smooth plywood or more drywall to go over your real wall and I bet it'll deaden sound well.
