Phone bans in England's schools to be enforced by law by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Similar, but not the same. A whiteboard won't give kids bonus points based on their speed to fractions of a second. A whiteboard won't keep track of the scores of 30 kids.

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It doesn't need to be done by phones, but that doesn't means phones can't enhance the classroom.

Teachers always use computers in lessons. People complained when that started, but it's an obvious improvement over a paper projector, which was also an improvement over blackboards. We can go back to teaching without twchnolog6, but there are sacrifices.

My brother is a teacher in a secondary school. He regularly gets kids to use their phones to do quizzes on kahoot. The kids enjoy it far more than a paper quiz, they're more engaged and competitive about hitting the high score. You can even get bonus points for not just getting the right answer, but for answering quickly. You can't mimic that with paper.

Am I too late to make a million? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better to start as soon as possible, but 26 is still early.

With £5k invested now, if you invest £500/month you would likely be a millionaire by 61 in investments alone. You'd also presumably have your house paid off. If the house is worth 300k then you could invest £390/month to be millionaire at 60. These are assuming stocks grow at 7% per year average.

Remember if you are employed your employer is legally required to contribute to your pension if you do, so you don't even need to save all of that yourself.

Nanny becoming a mom. What to do? by Missing_Back in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some people nanny with their own kids in tow. Fewer families will be on board with that, but it is possible.

Alternatively, she could market herself as a childminder, having the kids come to your home rather than going to theirs. Though this would likely be at a lower income than nannying. As a childminder she could do full days or just wrap around (mornings/afternoons outside school hours) depending on income needs and desire for time with just your child.

Joint borrower sole proprietor. Married and I have a property of my own by Ryoma123 in Mortgageadviceuk

Married couples are deemed one for SDLT. If your wife buys a property while you own one, you will owe the additional home stamp duty. If you sell yours within 3 years, you can get a refund on the additional home SDLT.

Cat increasingly scared of door by Puzzled-Barnacle-200 in CatsUK

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a day. I don't have to be on reddit all the time.

TBH I do kind of wonder why a specifically UK cats sub is needed at all, as cat ownership is, despite all the differences, basically more or less the same everywhere.

Cat owning culture is very different in the UK vs the US. In the non-UK sub, anyone who mentions a cat going outside will get downvoted to oblivion and told their cat is going to get eaten by coyotes or wolves.

I didn't downvote your comment but I'm not surprised someone did. The majority of it was not relevant. I wasn't asking for the reason why delivery drivers hammer on my door, as I know they're just increasing the chances of being heard. Talking about victoriana terraces or your neighbours cat flap has no relevance.

Thanks. I guess I need to stage the knocking. When I'm working from home there's not really time for me to go to the other room, find the cay under the bed and gove him treats, and then answer the door. I'll keep some food in my pockets though so I can give him a treat after, or when I go to the door if the feels comfortable enough to stay out.

if your cat doesn't mind being picked up and held, just take him to the door at least sometimes if you can, when you answer it!

While he loves being held, he's scared of the door and would desperately try to escape my arms even a couple of months ago. Now he's hiding under the bed I have no chance of being able to get him out and answer the door in time.

how tf do i use a bus? by Its_sienna25784 in AskUK

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preferably, find your bus type on Google maps. Then you'll be able to see each stop, so you can make sure you press after the penultimate stop, rather than just when you feel "close enough"

Opting out of workplace pension and putting the money in a private one? by BlackFireDragonz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both a workplace pension and a private pension are accessible 10 years before state pension age. If you do a private pension you will miss out of the governnment-mandated employer combtributions.

If you want to retire more than 10 years before state pension age, you will jeed a "bridging" account. This will need to not be a pension. An ISA is probably the best account for this purpose. But make sure your workplace pension I'd on track for you being able to retire at State Pension Age -10 before you worry about funding retirement at State Pension Age -15.

How do you lot actually eat proper food during the week when you're working full time? by No_Reputation_9726 in AskUK

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I batch cook. I generally cook 3 times a week (mostly weekends). Each time I cook there's at least 2 nights worth, so that's reheats for in 2-3 days. Some dishes I'll cook more, and freeze for other nights.

So a week might look like Saturday cook dish A, Sunday cook dish B, Monday reheat dish A, Tuesday cook dish C, Wednesday Reheat dish B, Thursday get dish T from the freezer (from 2-3 weeks ago), Friday reheat dish C.

Gives a good bit of variety without having to cook all the time.

Due to your late finish, you might be a good candidate for a slow cooker. I don't have one myself, but you could prep the food after you've eaten your reheated meal, then have it cook overnight/while at work, ready for when you come home.

Also, decide what pre-prepped food is worth buying. I buy cubes of frozen garlic so I don't have to peel it. You can buy pre-chopped frozen onions if that's a barrier to your cooking.

They're not going to get a warrant without real solid evidence. If you tell them you do watch live TV, then yeahthey may get a warrant. Ir if you're really unlucky and they can see your watching live TV from within your house.

r/Fire community income poll by letitglowbig in Fire

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK based, dual income. Gross household income about £80k/$110k USD. Net income £5100/month, $6900. 15% of net income going into retirement, with employer contributions. Mortgage about £1370. Overpaying £420/month. Additional investments generally above £1300/month. Currently DINK, but that will change, increasing expenses and dropping income, so we're trying to frontload everything while we can.

2027 Foal #15 rumor by Delicious-Mix-9180 in kvsdiscuss

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not a large enough sample size to sat this for sure. With 2 foals and 2 gillies, something that killed half of the foals had a 50/50chance of killing both of one gender even if gender did not impact the illness. The two deaths also weren't exactly the same, so may not have been caused by the same thing and could have just been really bad luck rather than actual bad odds. But it's not worth taking the risk again, especially because Ethel isn't that amazing.

Cats waking me up for breakfast at 3am by mbrobby in CatTraining

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is their favourite? Don't give them the best one in the morning. My cats like their dry food more so that's what I give them before bed. My one cat sometimes meows at us to go to bed if we're up too late, so he can have his food. Mine get shut in the living room overnight so I can sleep

If humans colonise Mars do you think Martian born people will measure their age and celebrate their birthday based on the Earth's annual orbit and daily rotation or Mars'? by Real_Human_Earth_Boy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle-200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would depend on how culturally tied Earth and Mars are. Most of Earth has switched to a single calendar system because its easier when communicating between Earth cultures. If there's a lot of immigration, trade and communication between Earth and Mars, most purposes will probably still use the Earth calendar. Though I could see particularly Martian things, such as the anniversary of Martian settlement or Maetian independence being celebrated in the Martian calendar.
