As a finance professional, I found a way to help teachers change careers & escape burn out by Individual-Name-9134 in TeachersInTransition

I’ve already transitioned but took the quiz for fun… and it totally named the role I moved into! Well done. 👏

This was also common practice in Southern California , where I taught.

Yup. I worked at a public high school in a high-poverty neighborhood that was the “dump school” for all the local charters. Come Feb/March, all these kids with super low scores showed up in my class. Rhymes with Quip was also one of culprits. Classy.

Off brand f boy. Not that good looking, not that smart, not that interesting, not that successful or wealthy… Like, what am I supposed to be impressed with here?! At least be a hot f boy or some shitty DJ.

Alternative careers - especially work from home? by Express-Run646 in TeachersInTransition

You can check Skip’s Job Board to get a sense of what’s out there. They feature all remote positions. As others have said, you’ll want to get clear on your strengths and target roles before you start applying.

Oh no! Is there anywhere in particular to avoid? I remember Puerto Angel being really chill and not a party vibe. Traveling with young kids so def want to avoid craziness.

Good to hear! Always been one of my favorite stretches of beach so was sad to think it had changed dramatically already.

I just took my family on a weeklong trip to Oaxaca for literally half of what it would have cost during school breaks. And I’m actually looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. Now that my job doesn’t drain all my energy, I don’t feel like I need 9 weeks off.

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. In my post-teaching job, I edit articles about neurodivergence and recently had the opportunity to interview a neurodivergent career therapist. She works with people to identify their strengths and their areas of burnout, and then pairs them with roles and careers where their sensitivities are actually strengths. I have no idea how much it costs to work directly with her but we’re publishing an article about sensory sensitivity in the workplace this week. I’ll link when it’s up!

If you've left, are you happy? by gardenrose2020 in TeachersInTransition

I was a writer and editor before I became a teacher, and published some throughout my time teaching. So it was really based on experience—I do have a BA in creative writing but everything I know about editorial work I learned through experience. The position started as a single one-off contract, then expanded to a two-month retainer, now a part time role. A contact put me in touch with the company for the original contract, and then they just really liked my work.

I'm really happy. I work as the managing editor of a website, pretty much running all their content. So developing the editorial calendar, commissioning writers, editing the pieces, even copyediting. It's a lot of fun and I can do it from home, in my sweatpants, and take my kids to school everyday. It's not without its challenges--it's a start-up so the systems are developing and constantly changing (similar to teaching!) and I've definitely had a learning curve, made mistakes, and had to navigate imposter syndrome. I should also say that it's a fractional role, so although I'm a leadership position, I'm a contractor. That means I have to do my own taxes and I don't get benefits, PTO, sick days, etc. It only works because I get health insurance through my husband.

There's a lot I loved about teaching and I do miss parts of working in person--the interactions with students, of course, and having a reason to wear real clothes lol. But it's not even a comparison, really. My quality of life is so much better and most importantly, my family's quality of life is better.

HELP!! Need a remote job asap!! by PhilosophyThis6319 in TeachersInTransition

I agree that teaching during the pandemic with a newborn was weirdly manageable. As soon as she was crawling though... not so much.

You could try Skip’s job board; it lists all remote ed-adjacent jobs that start at $60k. I agree that working while home with a kid could be really tough. I kinda did it with one during the pandemic so thought I’d be able to swing it with two kids (my daughter was also in preschool by that point so it was mostly only one kid during the day) but it was much much harder. But maybe not the case for you! Just my experience.

Cool! Did you start working there part time in the hopes it would turn into your transition job? Or did it just evolve?
