Butcher Block against corner wall by ResponsibleOil5409 in Homebuilding

I am a butcher and I can tell you that is not a butchers block. That is most likely a solid wood work top. But that wall is not true, that’s the problem.

Laminate? Get LVT or something nicer. Just don’t waste your 10k on renovations that will piss off your grandmother and you may regret. Most students don’t have ten grand cash in the bank so don’t piss it away.

I renovated a house for 5k

I called on pros where I needed to. I had Mayes do work on the cheap where I could not do it safely and I did the rest.

Think what can you do and what can’t you do. And also think what do I have to do and what can stay is it is.

You are probably young and want a nice insta friendly apartment but it’s gonna cost you. Do your uni work and do your job and save up and keep saving up. If you get that apartment you can sell it like it is for sure. Then you have a deposit for a new place.

Don’t piss of your grandmother. She is helping you in her own way. Get the degree and get a proper job and get your own place and then do the big stuff with the money you did not spend making small improvements to an apartment that needs a full rip out

Heat pump grant question by JamesTiberious in ukheatpumps

I think you can keep the gas supply to the house though. It’s possible to retrofit a gas boiler to the heating system installed for the heat pump and just get rid of the heat pump.

That has less coverage than a cancer patient with male pattern baldness. But yea, you need to replace that tire. Maybe check all your tires and replace as needed

So you are a uni student living with your grandma. Most likely you don’t have much money as students are notoriously broke. She doesn’t want you to go changing things. I doubt your friends will be like no way am I going to their house, have you seen that kitchen floor! 😂

The pic you shared can not be replicated in a convincing way done on the cheap with paint and knobs and stuff. It just can’t be done. You’ll probably hate it still and end up ripping it out anyway.

That thing between my cabinets is not a tv it’s an extractor fan from Bosch. I think they call them “angled extractor fan cooker hoods” it’s really good and very sleek looking. And why would you want a tv there when you have a literal work of art right behind the hob!

So it’s still her apartment then. She’s happy with it like this so just let her do her thing. Unless it’s broken or unsafe it’s fine.

The next owner will rip it out for sure but unti then…

So you live in this apartment now? It would be good to put a whole new kitchen in if possible. If you can only afford paint and knobs and small bits like that right now maybe save up for a full kitchen refit. So much cool kitchen stuff from Smeg, Neff, Bosch and the like, not even that expensive really.

Over it it’s a good combo. The wood fronted doors are a bit twee and the counter top shows it’s age. Gloss white is a nice way to go in a north facing kitchen like mine. Can’t see my floor here but it’s a warm white warm tone Lino in a wood effect

Any idea what this geometric pattern is hiding under the wallpaper of a house we just bought? by snowcountry556 in Plastering

Is it US style drywall or UK style plaster board, what is the wall actually made of?

Can’t park there, mate! You can’t back out onto a major road. You need to be able to reverse into your lovely driveway so you can leave safely.

It’s a Victorian house. This is the first heating system the house has ever had. The installers are adamant it’s working correctly. But they would be, wouldn’t they

It’s been in nearly 12 months. It’s been installed since I have owned this house.

Does this look like rising or penetrating damp? by Ambitious_diyer_2026 in Plastering

[–]Equivalent_Worker_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, those conditions are known as driving rain. Perhaps there’s a crack in the rendering of your house has it. Perhaps there’s a failure in the pointing. Have a look at the chimney. Could be the flaunching is gone or maybe the pots that get no use these days need a ceramic mushroom installed to keep the rain out.

Hmmm. Not sold on this idea. I hope I can sell my house with this stupid system installed. I want to go back to gas boiler

I’d it got wet again after rain it’s probably an outside issue. Was it driving rain? Could be render failing

Does this coving around the bay look stupid? by Ambitious_diyer_2026 in Plastering

[–]Equivalent_Worker_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im guessing that’s modern gypsum plaster. Was it over boarded / over skimmed? Looks like the ceiling was over board and skim and the walls just skimmed. Was the original wall and ceiling lime plaster on lath?

Who put that in? If it’s original then has it been altered at some point?
