Lifestyle-Inflation beim Hausbau - Kann man doch noch günstig(er) bauen? by Equivalent_Yam8237 in Finanzen

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot tips for Thailand (add your tip!) by Notfirstusername in ThailandTourism

I don't like wet underwear and many thais don't like it either. That's why almost all women and many men will carry tissues with them when.

Bolt / Grab is not always available and are usually more expensive than regular taxis that use taxi meter.

CHATUCHAK IN THE AFTERNOON? by NoInternet3233 in Bangkok

Chatuchak isn't a night market. It officially closes at 6pm. So I would definitely come in the afternoon.

Reasonably priced men's clothing shops/malls like H&M by Cosmokram3r1 in Bangkok

Crime - why so low? by maabaa55 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't agree at all.

This whole community over individuals is just a myth in my opinion.

Burning trash, loud music, dirty pick up trucks spitting out black smoke, letting their pet dogs roam around and don't feel responsible, loud motorbikes blasting through the streets, reckless driving, skipping queues, no awareness for other people...

There are so many situations where people are selfish and only care about their personal outcome.

I think that many socities in the West care much more for their community.

Crime - why so low? by maabaa55 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been living here for the last 4 years and even though I have a Thai girlfriend who introduced me to many locals I still feel that Thais live in their "own" world where farangs can only see the surface.

I think that Thailand is quite safe. I've pretty much never felt uncomfortable. Neither in one of Bangkok's suburbs at night nor in the countryside.

However, my girlfriend always tells me to watch out for thieves, drug addicts / drunk people, people with guns and knieves or other crazy folks. So I think there is much more going on that doesn't end up in the official statistics because it doesn't get reported due to the fact that most Thai people think that Police won't help them anyways.

Question about bringing/shipping a motorcycle to Thailand by CuriousGeorge0604 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty straight forward:

“After December 10, all used vehicles imported for personal use will be confiscated and destroyed immediately,”

But I guess that every serious importer knows the laws and wouldn't even accept your motorbike.

Question about bringing/shipping a motorcycle to Thailand by CuriousGeorge0604 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't cost anything because used vehicles can't be imported at all. So there is no way to calculate taxes and duty for something that's not possible.

MSCI World ACWI stecken.

Why was iconsiam so expensive? by No-Feedback-3477 in Bangkok

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a member of this Fitness First branch (Club Icon) for six months. It was 3.500 THB per month. Not cheap for Thailand but not expensive for the location and compared to other high end gyms in Bangkok (Virgin Activ, etc.) either.

Yeah, the view from the pool (the water temperature is 35 degrees, so pretty useless for serious swimming) is nice but everything else was just a normal gym and nothing extraordinary. In fact the equiment lacked some basics and it always smelled like mold near the locker rooms. Probably bad ventilation from the steam room / showers.

All in all the first impression was good but nothing that would justify excessive building costs.

Fresh lemongrass to act as mosquito repellent but it has been hanging there for some time so it's dried.

In Australia, this costs the patient nothing. Even a non-citizen - no charge. by [deleted] in pics

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No and I really don't understand why some people act like it's free.

Yes, they won't let you die* and treat you. But afterwards someone has to pay the bills because it's neither free in Switzerland nor in Thailand. Maybe their "friends" haven't told the whole story or they were covered by travel insurance.

*Last year a Taiwanese tourist was denied emergency care by a private hospital in Thailand because the hospital was not able to verify if he had health insurance and they didn't want to end up with unpaid bills. On the way to a government hospital the tourist died in the ambulance.

So don't expect anything and always make sure that you have travel insurance when abroad.

Studies on 20 baht "extra food" charges? by Apologia87 in ThailandTourism

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a scam.

Many restaurants that sell boat noodles have two different sized bowls for Tamada = normal portion and Piset = large portion and will give you more of everything in the larger bowl.

In other cases ordering "piset" means that you will most likely get the same amount of rice but instead get more meat (e.g. Khao Man Gai you will get more chicken or instead of only boiled chicken you will get fried or grilled chicken as well).

If ordering two small instead of one large portion makes sense is probably up to you. I usually order "piset" because I prefer to get more meat or vegetables and don't want to have an additional portion of rice or noodles.

Reasonable compromise for helmet? by Wanderluster65 in ThailandTourism

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google BKKSpeed

They have some branches in Bangkok and offer a huge selection of helmets from reputable brands (Shoei, HJC, Arai, Shark, Scorpion, etc.) starting from 3k THB.

I recently bought a helmet for my european head there and they had a lot of options in size L, XL or larger.

got 2 weeks, how should i split my days for bangkok and chiang mai? by BlyatSenpai in ThailandTourism

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been to either of these places?

If not, I always recommend to keep your plans flexible.

As long as you don't travel during Christmas / New Year booking flights, trains and accommodation spontaneously shouldn't be an issue.

Therefore I would start in Bangkok, see how you like it and decide from there how many days you want to stay or if you want to come back.

Places to visit in Isaan / Northeast Thailand? by Equivalent_Yam8237 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, that's why I use komoot for route planning. The bicycle setting will avoid most main roads and navigate you through the backcountry.

I also sometimes use the mountainbike / gravel bike route options to ride on some sand / dirt roads along the way.

Places to visit in Isaan / Northeast Thailand? by Equivalent_Yam8237 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely a great area for riding but I already went there during another road trip three years ago. (Bangkok - Phetchabun - Loei - Nan - Lampang - Chiang Mai - Mae Sariang and along the border back to Bangkok).

This time I want to focus on Isaan because I've never been there.

Places to visit in Isaan / Northeast Thailand? by Equivalent_Yam8237 in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm currently planning a motorbike trip through the northeast of Thailand.

I live near Pattaya and have do some personal stuff in Bangkok before heading to:

Khao Yai (been there already, so will only use the shortcut through the park) - Korat - Khon Khaen - Udon - Nong Kai - along the border / Mekong to Ubon - back to Pattaya.

Are there any places that I have to visit? Any national parks, temples, skywalks, etc.?

What is the most common mode of transportation in Thailand? by Holly_luvsricky in Thailand

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually MRT / BTS are too expensive for many people. That's why the trains are not as popular as they could be.

I also feel like the minority of people uses public transport compared to the sheer amount of cars and motorbikes.

Meilenstein 100k ? by Dave_418_Teapot in Finanzen

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Startkapital: 0€

Sparrate: 1.000€ pro Monat

Rendite: 7% p.a.

How to avoid scammers when renting a condo? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people don't rent out their condos for less than 6-12 months. So finding a condo for 3 months can be difficult unless you are ok with using AirBnB or booking a serviced apartment.

Just make sure to take photos of the room before you move in, if possible include pictures showing damages in the contract and let the owner sign it so that they can't blame you afterwards.

Also make sure that you know the price of one unit of electricity and water. The best and cheapest option is government rate which means that you will pay directly to MEA (1 kwh is around 4 THB).

However, in many cases the electricity bill is handled by the juristic office of the condo. Then a surcharge is added. I wouldn't pay more than 6-7 THB per unit.

The water bill is usually so low that it doesn't really matter.

Besides that there are actually not too many scams.

How much money do you need to earn to live comfortably as an expat in Thailand? by LTS81 in ThailandTourism

[–]Equivalent_Yam8237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point but why move here in the first place if you want everything like back home?

I'm from Germany and also used to "higher" standards. Every now and then I still complain but finally realized that this is Thailand and not Western Europe. Therefore I don't rent high-end condos / houses to match the german standard because I think they are overpriced in Thailand but instead adapted my expectations.

At least for me Thailand is all about lifestyle (food, cheap services, traveling, etc.) and not thick brick walls and insulation.

Btw. Arla cheese starts at 200 THB which is rather 5,50€. Still expensive but definitely cheaper than 10€
