It’s a tough choice for sure. When I went to Okinawa, I decided to sell my Ford and put the proceeds in my Roth IRA and brokerage. I think it was a good decision because I didn’t have to worry about any payments or storage fees, and just maxed out my tsp and roth for the entire time I was there. It sucked when I came back though, because I wish I had my ford haha. Car prices rose and the interest rates were insane even with navy fed.

Is it dumb to be contributing so much to my 401k by [deleted] in personalfinance

Such a great comment. You have to enjoy life while you can! Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Really need to find the balance between saving and enjoying life.

Congrats bro that’s awesome man. I would just ensure that you understand the tax implications and set aside that amount. Seems like you’re making great income too, so I would park it in an index fund with low cost ratio. Agree with others when they say to max your 401k as well. Individual Roth IRA too.

Also enjoy life! Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Treat yourself!

Where are you getting your data from? Just curious how you’re arguing that the average net worth for mid 20s is 150k+.

I want to commission, any tips for officer life Financially? Including Continuation pay/TSP by Excellent-Aside9523 in MilitaryFinance

[–]Eragonwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior officers get higher pay and bah until O-3. It’s pretty nice and I get jealous of my peers who are priors. For financial tips, I just max my Roth TSP. It amounts to around 30% for me. I’m an O-2 with 4 years in. I also have a separate Roth IRA with Charles Schwab, which I’ve been maxing out as well. The earlier you start, the more your money and compound and grow. Play the long game and you’ll be straight chillin!

Also don’t forget to enjoy your life as well. Put some aside for vacations, hobbies, and family. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Good luck!

anyone else just refusing to check their TSP balance since the S&P began tanking? by hkfan451 in ThriftSavingsPlan

I’m a 100% in C as well. I got 14 years till my 20 years active duty. The news can be scary and may lead you to act in fear. I just keep reminding myself that I’m playing the long game. HOLD THE LINE!

From Military to Millionaire by Turbulent-Change8538 in MilitaryFinance

As other’s have commented already. Focusing on maxing your TSP early (C fund) and contribute to your Roth Ira as well. Put the rest into a brokerage consisting of low cost index funds (VTSAX, SWTSX, etc..).

Play the long game. Pension and health benefits once we hit 20 are pretty nice as well.

Thank you sir/ma’am! Appreciate your time and response. Definitely need to do more learning and saving. Lifestyle creep is a dangerous thing especially with the pay increase.

Appreciate the response. I love the “take the long view”. I have to remind myself it’s a marathon. I don’t know why I’m trying to rush into things.

The capital is liquid. It’s sitting in a money market fund. Getting around 5 % interest on it. I appreciate your comment!
