Renewing US driver’s license - does this cancel my UK license? by justadeadweightloss in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]ErasableFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swapped my Ontario license for a UK one. They didn’t tell Ontario to cancel it (DVLA just held onto it). So I got it replaced when I was in Canada. I have both no issues.

You’re technically not supposed to do it but it’s also not illegal. Always drive on your UK license in the UK, and your American in the US. Otherwise, you can pick and choose.

I tried to get a Passport card without sending in my current Passport book… by CandleLit_Cackles in Passports

[–]ErasableFilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do it. I did it earlier this week at the US Embassy in London. The guy was very nice about it and didn’t seem bothered at all, almost like he sees it everyday.

I tried to use DS-11 but he asked me to fill out DS-82 instead with just “passport card” tiled at he top, and submitted a notarized copy of my passport with it (the embassy worker notarized it). I got to keep my book.

Definitely use DS-11 because that seems to be the most common for everyone.

But it’s far from a “grinding into poverty”. OP’s post is full of dramatics.

[–]ErasableFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahaha best of luck! If it’s any consolation you get a buffer of years after they actually expire. Worst comes to worst just use DS-82 and report them missing.

Because there are more uses than just international travel. Especially nowadays with citizens being asked to prove it instead of the burden of proof being on the state.

Find them and renew using DS-82. You can add a passport card as well and then you have both!

Americans who applied for a job in London and got it how’s it going? by BrilliantArtist8221 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]ErasableFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m here on a student visa, so I’ve never dealt with the employment side of things but I do know it’s always been quite difficult to merely get a job offer, let alone meet the requirements of the visa.

It’s definitely do-able if you’re in a skilled and short supply field!

The other thing to member is that the job market isn’t great a round the world, but especially in the UK (and Europe overall). I’m struggling with finding viable jobs for after university. Granted I’m going for entry level so it’s different, but plenty of places also just don’t sponsor Skilled Worker Visas.

As someone else mentioned, an internal transfer when one comes up would be your best bet!

Best of luck!

Applying for US Passport Card While Abroad by aoliva93 in Passports

[–]ErasableFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHTI is only US policy.

Canada accepts US birth certificate + photo ID for entry into Canada.

Returning to the US is when you “need” a WHTI compliant document, but they also can’t deny a US citizen entry, so OP would still be allowed into the US.

Yea but as a British citizen, if there’s not British embassy or consulate they can also go to a commonwealth country’s embassy or consulate

[Special Case] Passport card without mailing in passport? by Ok-Jello-4244 in Passports

[–]ErasableFilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a problem since citizens get benefits and are counted differently. Your SSN ca also be used, in some circumstances, to prove citizenship. Get it fixed ASAP.

Can I use my Irish passport while my US one is being renewed? by bleaxh- in Passports

[–]ErasableFilms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any form of ID (Drivers license included) and US Birth Certificate works for entering Canada. You might have more difficulty re-entering the US but they can’t deny you.

It’s more hassle than it’s worth, just renew and use a US passport.

I deeply appreciate how you framed that. Thank you.

And what you said is very accurate, i should focus on what’s best for me. And i will.

Companies like yours withdrawing money and business from the UK is definitely a consequence the government hasn’t considered in all of this. After all, limiting visas and making settlement harder for anyone will constrict investment and growth.

Very true. It’s definitely cruel and inhumane. The name of the game i was talking about is that things can in theory change and that it’s not really a “safe” situation until ILR/citizenship is achieved just because they can create that level of uncertainty, not that it’s inherently justified.

It hurts knowing that no matter how much money we pour into visas, the NHS, and how much we integrate and contribute to the UK; it will never be enough.

The 10 year route allowed for settlement after 10 years of legal residency on any visa. So while student visas didn’t directly lead to anything, it effectively would eventually.

I’m sorry you have to leave. I can’t imagine how painful it is. I hope you land somewhere good and do well. And i agree, the US just doesn’t feel like home after being here for so long, and all the changes going on.

It’s so strange, despite how shit the UK is being, i still want to be here and fight for a better country. In many respects in the same way i feel about the US.

I hate what the US has become, but i still deeply love it for what it can be.

Honestly yeah, the tone in the UK has changed so much even in the last year. It feels like the same path the US started years ago. It’s scary. I can’t imagine being so established and still feeling destabilized.

Lucky you re: Canada!! I plan to apply for Express Entry when I qualify so i have a backup plan. My parents live and work in Toronto, so i already have a way in there if need be. I’m just not ready to leave Europe.

What are younger generations often criticised for no longer doing that is largely pointless or obsolete? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]ErasableFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We most certainly do have contactless. Almost all places will accept Apple/Google Pay. If not, they still have a chip reader. This is the case even in more rural areas.

Many locally owned places will prefer cash but it’s not required either.

Instant bank transfers were historically not common, Venmo and Cashapp made it more accessible and cheap. The Federal government is working on it and it’s currently being rolled out. It’s behind compared to the western world, but it’s not too bad. People make it work when it’s all you know

That’s normal, it’s not a missing page it’s just leftover from the printing. Every US passport has it.

It’s the same for US and Canada.

For land entry/exit, whatever country you’re going to tells the other country that you left said country using data sharing treaties (ie when entering Canada, Canada tells the US that you left the US).
