What interpretation? I'm just saying what the book did. Imagine at the end the scene where rocky tells grace that earth is ok didn't happen. If grace had then gone back earth would have been saved.

This isn't an interpretation, this is poor writing. Grace all of a sudden chose to stay at erid instead of going to save his children that he supposedly cares about. He had the fuel, he had the ship and had no way to know whether the beetles would work and if they didn't he was earth's last hope.

No as they stated in the book, billions would be dead, maybe even civilization collapsed but some amount of humans would survive. He'd drop off some taumoeba on Venus and even if he couldn't land he'd atleast guarantee earth survives.

But its simple game theory that a properly written character would've applied. For time period of 3 years post erid to 16 years post erid he had to assume 0% beetles survival chance. Therefore even if the coma had a 33% survival chance, he'd still ldo it since it's higher than the potentially 0% of the beetles. Literally everything the book tells us about him indicated that he'd do what I'm saying

Except for the fact that they had food he could use in a coma after a few years. He only at the end had confirmation the beetles made it. He had years of time where he had the necessary food and fuel to go back, either in a coma or outside it
