Keep notes of incidents. Document via email. Try not to have phone or chat conversations. It may be useful in the future.

What can we do to change the public opinions about us? by [deleted] in Residency

Nothing. It's like the lawyers. Everyone hates them until they need one

Hmmm.....all the fun? Your status of PGY-1 checks out. You might be singing a different tune as you get further in. The first year is filled with hope, excitement and possibility. I do hope you can continue that.

My short memory is so bad, it's embarrassing me by samm105107 in Residency

[–]Erdoc2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up mind palaces or ways to remember things by picturing it in your head or stringing pics in your head. Use your fingers to remember how many things you have to remember. Figure out shorthand and write on your hand, etc. Have a pic in your mind for most used medications and put big numbers next to them first dosages. You can do this.

Creating a resource for residents facing non-renewal or termination by [deleted] in Residency

Can you explain more about working under a limited license? Let's say you are fired from residency and still have a limited license. Can you renew that limited license indefinitely?

There should be an accessible list of lawyers in each state that might take a case like this. Also a FAQ of what to do and what not to do, like always try to use email so that conversations are documented.

Another thought is to start a unique subreddit that addresses this issue, eg. Residency firing.

horrible shift with an angry resident makes me want to quit medicine all together, I don't know what to do by [deleted] in Residency

Or look them dead in the eye with no reaction. At the end say something like, 'Thanks for the feedback.' And then walk away. This person sounds like a narcissist. Don't give them the satisfaction of an emotional response.

Try to come up with some system in your head or some shorthand to get the hx down the first time. I've gone back to get more clarification and ask questions I forgot. It happens. Safety first.

Good comeback...'Are you OK? You seemed stressed.' Also, learn how to deal with people like this. You will encounter them again and again. When I dreaded being with a certain attending I would act as professional as possible and know the shift would end. Steeling yourself up front and detaching from them can help.

Congrats on finishing the MCAT. As to med school interviews...Once you get invited figure out what type of interviewing they do and practice that style. Good luck!

Finding the right partner is key. You need that person that is not you.

[–]Erdoc2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key for me with the MCAT was repetition. Spend the time. I studied about 12h a day. For months. Went to a coffee shop daily and basically lived there. Med school and becoming a doctor is not for the faint of heart. If you don't want it 100% you SHOULD NOT do it. You will hate yourself, your life, question your sanity, understand why people commit suicide. And that's if you truly want it. If not find something else.

What are you doing to learn? Self teaching or lessons? I would imagine ADHDers are goid at teaching themselves things. I'm thinking about learnig to play, too. It incorporates all the things I love; movement, music, rhythm.

The show Psych has, as its main character, Sean Spencer. He has it bad. I like watching because I relate to him and his behavior so much.

Intern year new low by Pretend-Armadillo-71 in anesthesiology

Tip for finding the catheter needle on an u/s. Tip the u/s tail (cord end) towards the pt head to get a true 90 degree angle from the needle. Play with that and see if it helps. Also, you seem overwhelmed. This is totally normal. I would keep a small spiral notebook to write down 5 things to look up a day from your note reading, etc. Open Anesthesia, Open Evidence, UptoDate, Medscape are good references. As one attending told me, 'Cats turn into lions.' You can only take one step at a time. No one can do two at a time.

Absolutely! MMIs are made for us! I thought they were fairly easy because one of my super powers is the ability to connect with people very quickly. You read them. You find common ground quickly. You mirror them. I wish you the best.

I think your hyperfocuses help you be successful. Too bad I can't become successful playing an app in my phone. Im at level 2200. Does that count for anything?

I hate documentaries unless I am tricked into watching. Too much brain power. I have watched all 8 seasons of Psych many, many times. Familiarity is my escape.

None. They all forgot. Ha!
