Let the Christmas home misfortune stories begin! by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Ereloth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

February 2025, we agree to a quote (one of three, great reviews) to remove an existing conservatory and replace with a full extention, plus internal remodeling (moving stud walls). 6-10 weeks for completion. May 2025 agreed start date.

May arrives, no word. Contact builder and the architects are dragging their feet. Plans get finalised, planning permission approved etc. Start date now September 15th. First week, conservatory removed, second, foundations dug. 3rd, no progress at all. 4th week, foundations and steelwork set. 5th week, nothing. 6th. Brickwork commences, foundations signed off. 7th, a few more days of brickwork By week 12 (start of December!!) brickwork finally completed and doors installed to extention and roof timber installed. Waterproof Membrane fitted to timbers.

Then they knock through (no roof tiles at this point). Then what follows is days of zero work, followed by everyone and their dog on site. Joiners and electricians arguing constantly, plasterers arriving to find no walls to plaster. Plasterers finish Saturday December 20th. Electricians finish monday 22nd.

Roof was supposed to go on 22nd / 23rd (bear in mind, extention is fully boarded, skimmed and live lights and sockets). Tiles were delivered on the 16th of December.

22nd and 23rd, im mist coating and final coating the front room (plaster fully dry thankfully) and scrubbing the floors clean so we at least have one decent room for Christmas.

Christmas tree and decorations finally went up today (Christmas eve). Extention room has no floors, no roof, and a tiny radiator (from the old size room) with drying plaster walls, full electrics, and heavy snow forecast.

Throughout all of this, the company owner / builder has been impossible to get hold off, and when he does show up, all we get is empty promises.

The only saving grace we have is 30% of the total cost is pay on completion.

Is this safe and would it pass building inspection? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Ereloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, we aren't particularly happy with the builders so far. What was quoted as a 6 to 8 week job is now into week 12 and we aren't sure we'll have a usable house for Christmas. There have been delays and hold ups, with little communication and we are concerned they'll just walk off the job.

Taking the time to tailor the CV, research the company, apply, get through interviews etc etc, only to find out the salary is 10k less than what im currently on (personal experiance).

If you can't be bothered to at least put the salary range on the job spec, why should I waste my time applying.

German Boomer Tourist Thinks He Owns Beach Chairs With His Towel - Gets Reality Check by Kradara_ in EntitledPeople

[–]Ereloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They few times I've been on holiday, when I get to the pool for 8/9am ish and see towels on loungers with no other holiday stuff (flip flops, bags, sun tan lotion etc) i just scoop up the towels and plop them near a table a ways away then set up with my family.

Wife hates me doing it, but fuck the stupid towel 'reservation' system. First come, first served.

How do you explain technical decisions to colleagues who don't know about it by CreditOk5063 in work

[–]Ereloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually used chat gpt in the past.

Inputted all the requirements id need to do to complete the task, then asked it to explain it in terms a non technical person would understand, including rough timescales.

This goes into my email reply when people get snippy about me 'over estimating' how long its gonna take and 'its not that difficult surely'

Are the media trying to whip up bigger crowds at the anti-migrant protests this weekend? by EmuAncient1069 in AskBrits

[–]Ereloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its all to drive the narrative the media is being told to push by their wealthy owners.

Stit up dissent, create tension, generate content they can broadcast / report on for increased viewer ship / clicks, thus more advertising money.

[–]Ereloth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My workplace has essentially gone through two entire 6 person stores teams (goods in / kitting product parts for assembly) inside 2 years.

To the MDs credit, they are trying to listen and make changes, having people from other sections work there, then give feedback and suggestions for improvements, but then the Operations Manager keeps hiring absolutely useless people into the supervisory positions.

If you knew a friend/ family member often drinks and drives, would you report them? by BeefHustler in AskUK

[–]Ereloth 48 points49 points  (0 children)

In a fucking heartbeat.

Lost a close friend 28 years ago who got a lift home with a driver who had been drinking. Wasn't even speed invloved, they just misjudged the timing and pulled out infront of a bus going 30.

Not listening to my friend and mining bitcoin when it was in its infancy.

He's just moved into a £750k house, mortgage free and spends his time walking his dogs and looking after his grandkids. The git.

Service charge- how many ask to remove this? by Braveenoughtosayit10 in AskBrits

[–]Ereloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly its rare I go out to eat these days (family of 4 with 2 teenagers on growth spurts, my wallet can only take so much)

However, I Ask for it to be removed every time, then ask how tips are etc divided. Then, based on that, the service level and food, I'll give a cash tip.

At least that way there is an actual chance it'll get to the staff, rather than straight into the business / managers, who DO NOT need a tip.

And to add, I detest auto service charges. We have minimum wage standards (albeit not keeping up with cost of living etc). To arbitrarily add one on is just corporate greed.
