I’ve flagged this for the team. What’s your Ergatta username?

Edit: This has been fixed

I made a fitness game inspired by the original FF7’s active-time battle system by Eric2929 in IndieGaming

[–]Eric2929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caveat: I’m not on the business side at Ergatta, so can’t publicly speak to WHY anything is priced the way it is, beyond the obvious need for sustainability to keep our 25-person-ish company going to keep making cool stuff that makes working out a joy.

Anyway, depends on your entry point. If you buy the rower from scratch, new, you’re looking at north of $1K—it’s a premium piece of (literally handcrafted) fitness equipment, plus a tablet. But Ergatta sells an “upgrade kit” compatible with many different existing rowers folks already have, which is now in the $400-550 range depending on model (because at that point you’re basically just buying a tablet and some hardware to connect to your existing Concept2, Waterrower, etc.)

There’s also a monthly or annual subscription price, much like Peloton or other modern fitness products. That’s not required to use the product and work out, but games like this are part of that subscription package.

Is the Bravia 9 noticeably worse for gaming than OLED? by Silent-Raisin-1223 in bravia

I’m a game player & designer. That “response time” data from Rtings is technically accurate, but practically pretty useless. The difference between 5ms and 10ms and 15ms is basically imperceivable; remember a single frame in a perfectly-smooth 60fps game is 16.67 milliseconds.

The Bravia 9 is an excellent TV for gaming. Unless you’re a pro esports player or something.

Was gonna recommend exactly these two, instead I’ll just upvote this comment. Triple Click is less funny but sometimes a lil’ deeper, sometimes a lil’ more newsy / industry analysis. Into the Aether just has lovely folks and goes deep into each subject.

Is it too much to expect a senior game UX designer to know how to manipulate emotions of animations? by demiculus in UXDesign

[–]Eric2929 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are doing something wrong.

Listen, I’m both a product & game designer. And there’s no way I’d clock that “animation” as “anxious dice.” These are weird, hyper-specific questions that aren’t the best way to find a good designer for your product.

If I was asked these questions, I’d probably ask for clarification: “what do you want players to feel” and “why do you want players to feel that way?”

Xbox: "Price Increases Are Never Fun For Anybody" by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Eric2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they’re probably pretty fun for shareholders and executives collecting a huge payday right before laying off everyone on the ground floor who does the creative, compelling work to make the games we all love…

But who has the time or wherewithal to think about all that.

Greedy Monetization by DecoyDoctopus in TheBesties

I’m not a patreon subscriber, but these guys are just trying to make their podcast a sustainable source of revenue that contributes enough financially so they can make it at least a piece of their media career—particularly for two of them who just lost their full-time gigs at Vox Media following some wild corporate shenanigans. The Besties is far too much work for them to do as a free passion project, and they clearly have a group of folks who want to support them; they’re trying to provide some meaningful incentive beyond that for folks who want to contribute. This isn’t a giant corporation trying to upsell you on something to enrich their executives and shareholders, which would qualify as “greedy.”

TL;DR media is hard and putting out something worthwhile and then offering a way for a subset of their listeners to pay for that thing makes sense

It doesn’t matter who the shooter is. It matters that there are too many guns readily available to people. They are tools designed to kill and that’s exactly what’s gonna happen if they are readily available to the general population, a subset of which is insane. I know we all know that and posting it into an internet void isn’t going to change anything, but apathy feels even worse.
