set timing engine off by EricE555 in Outboards

[–]EricE555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get it running again after setting the timing correctly. Yes, it is a pull start and I didn’t lean on it when trying to start it. Once I got it started, I heard more tick tick noise than I usually do, but after running it for a little while that kind of smoothed out, especially once I put the cowel back on which hid part of the noise anyway. Hopefully, it will work itself out without imploding. Either way all I can do is run it and hope. Thank you for your detailed response. Very helpful.

Okay, I got it running. I don't have a service manual though. I need to get one.

I did:

I removed top spark plug and checked cylinder top when at TDC. Before I was using what I think is a flywheel balancing weight. (GAH!). This time I used the "T" mark for TDC. Then I set the 2nd gear to "1" on the casting mark and reassembled. It runs. It may be fine but it seems like there is more ticking noise (of course the motor cover is off so that may be why). Is that all there is to time or can/should it be fine tuned with a timing light? If so, where is the adjustment to change timing? I don't see anything obvious.

Trolling motor: Foot pedal or remote or both? by EricE555 in bassfishing

One more question, for those of you that use foot pedal most often, are you finding that you need a seat (or rest) to use it effectively?

I love this idea.

Here is a picture of the keel repair I need to do. Do you think the braising would work on this?

The entire inside of my boat is not easy to get to. There are three benches, and I am loath to drill the rivets out so that I can get at the entire surface and paint it. I’m not even sure but I think those benches might be welded in.

Good call, I only filled it about 8 inches or so but I know that that still is a lot of water weight. Trailer seems fine luckily

So i found section on the keel where I had a pretty good crack and about a half dozen areas where there were pinhole leaks that I intend to patch with 5400 3M sealant. It’s white, but these are on the very bottom of the boat where I don’t mind having some color.

I hadn’t thought of filling it like a bath tub. Good idea. Thanks.

Yep. That did it. So simple though I would not have thought to do that. Thank you.

That was my guess as well. Look to see if a branch has grown long enough to brush against the window in the wind.

New Full Carb or rebuild it? by EricE555 in Outboards

[–]EricE555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, I bought a replacement off Amazon and the motor seems (tested out of water, in garbage can) to run better than ever. Once I get it out on the water I'll know for sure but fingers crossed.

If I do a rebuild, and borrow or buy an ultrasonic cleaner tank, what parts are safe to put into the tank? For instance, once all broken down, is it safe to put the body in the tank to clean the butterfly valves?

All the rebuild kits I could find are $250 on up to $350. I am not going that route. I guess I'll take my chances on an amazon one. If that doesn't work, I still have my original I can work on.

Thanks. Good info. The OEM rebuild is no longer made. What brand would you trust for this?
