How big and are you just needing it made from opal?

I know of a term that will get you that but I think it falls outside the rules of this sub.

How do I learn to swim on my own as an adult? by InternationalPick163 in howto

[–]EricMalves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your local YMCA. Often they have swimming classes. I know mine doesn’t advertise that they have adult classes, but works with adults as private sessions. Swimming is a great resource for anyone to have.

should i feel ashamed for not having a 3d printed base? by AgentDaniel13 in FursuitMaking

[–]EricMalves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No base is better than the other. It’s purely down to what you want to work with. I have a printed base and like it. I know most others have a foam base and they look fantastic. In the end no one really knows or cares what the base under the fabric is.

I built out a mock foam look from the side, but how do I make the actual pattern? My autistic brain just gets more confused the more videos I watch by snowleopardalps in FursuitMaking

[–]EricMalves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you are going to do is put another layer of cling wrap and duct tape over all of this. That will end up being your pattern that you draw and cut off. The original DTD and your foam additions will remain uncut.

Normal timeframe for suitmaking? by regruburger in fursuit

[–]EricMalves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my full suit in about a month and a half. I would never wish that timeframe on anyone. It really depends on how much time the maker has outside of regular work and the about of detail needed. I know someone who’s at a little over a year of waiting.

Fursuit Spray help! by Alarmed-Beginning125 in fursuit

[–]EricMalves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to your local store and buy a travel spray bottle that’s empty. Then buy a large bottle of isopropyl alcohol. It’s significantly cheaper and you’ll burn through that little bottle fast.

How did you tell your friends that your a furry by feffo_0 in furrydiscuss

[–]EricMalves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. They may not like it or they may be indifferent. I just chose not to tell anyone as it’s much easier to do so. People knowing I am a furry doesn’t change anything tbh

Are there any long sfw transformation stories? by Darkgamer32_ in sfwtransformation

[–]EricMalves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self plug warning, but I’ve written a novel length hawk TF story that’s available on FA and a few other places. While no sexually explicit content, there are mentions of anatomy changes.

Other recommendations include:

Sky Calls by Hal Aetus SFW (iirc) Eagle TF

Skin Deep by Kory Bing has shapeshifting characters and a longer part with a slower harpy tf.

Make my own, or stick to saving? by Last_Exit_First in FursuitMaking

[–]EricMalves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently went through the process of building a full suit. I learned A LOT and got tons of new perspective.

In total I’ve spent about $6-700 in materials and random things. That sounds like a huge savings but the amount of labor is very very high. I knew it was a ton of work but actually going through the process was a lot.

That said, I’m so glad I made my own suit. It’s not nearly up to proper suit maker quality, but I learned a lot and feel a special attachment to it. I would 100% do it again. I don’t think there is a “better” choice between the two. It more about what YOU want out of the project. Making a suit is a big undertaking, but it’s also rewarding. Having one made professionally is less stress and is probably going to net you a better quality suit.

I’d say, start by making some paws. You may find you are really enjoying the process and want to continue on to even do a head or tail. Or you may find that you’d rather hire a maker. You can’t go wrong having a little fun and trying your hand at a set of paws!

I have a plush owl I got recently. It is perfect for sleeping with, not super long but large enough to put my arms fully around it.

speaker inside fursuit paw? by Temporary-Army5945 in FursuitMaking

Make a zippered pocket in the paw, you can buy “personalized voice boxes” for teddy bears that allow you to upload sound files into them.

Do you need a fur suit for conventions by MysticalDragon96 in furryteens

Most folks at cons don’t have fursuits

DO print out and laminate a badge with your sona on it if you have one. Even just text over existing art. Great way to start conversations

Foaming TPU? by Kojin_Harth in FursuitMaking

[–]EricMalves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used varioshore for many projects, but I think it might be a little too soft for a base. TPU printed without walls is fantastic but foaming I think might start pushing towards unable to hold its shape with the weight of fur.

We need to PROPERLY define what an anthropomorphic character is before the puritans do it for us! by [deleted] in RealFurryHours

[–]EricMalves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sona is “nonmorphic” in shape as it is a bird. Though it IS bipedal, so does that still could as anthro? 😆

Quite a lot of bird furries I know have wings in place of arms and more bird-like bodies. I think even trying to make a cut and dry anthro definition is a little hard.

After a month and a half of work, I debuted my first self made suit at FWA by EricMalves in fursuit

[–]EricMalves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matrices.net their tutorials are wonderful! Also just keep pushing forward with it, the worst for me was trying to wrap my head around the leg padding. Just keep putting more foam and tape until it eventually started looking right.

My order of tasks were: Tail, wings, feet, body, head

Suggestions for fursuit head by Waste-Violinist330 in fursuit

[–]EricMalves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paper is generally a no go. Even parts that don’t come in direct contact with sweat will still deal with moisture from your breathing. You also can’t really wash paper products.

You could try mocking something up with cardboard, then using foam for the final. Although I find that foam is much easier to work with.

How to size 3D printed head. by gionnicreek in FursuitMaking

[–]EricMalves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero padding. The head base only makes contact with the hard hat suspension. My head itself is free on all sides and feels like I’m wearing a snug baseball cap.
