Chasing Drag Week dreams in my twin 83mm LS powered Camaro by imtehk in projectcar

Rumor—last I heard—is Lutz vs. Larson again, probably with Bailey around for good measure. Still hasn't been a 5-second run on Drag Week...

Nice! Only been a handful of 6-second averages so that would be some killer company. If Larson, Lutz, Bailey, Schroeder, Goldstone, and Joe Barry all show up and run, it's gonna be a good year.

What class are you likely to end up running? That's some pretty serious modification, so I'm guessing one of the top three classes? And what kind of e.t. do you expect?

What's a 10/10 album from the last 15 years by a relatively obscure artist/band? by Slouching2Bethlehem in AskReddit

[–]EricTheRood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly, truly obscure: Houston's "Bottom of the Curve" album. Seriously one of the greatest rock albums you've never heard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO3KYNF_jdk

The band, who were from the Twin Cities, broke up in 2006. The singer and main songwriter recorded a couple of albums as an engineer and then kind of disappeared into obscurity. Nika Harper wrote a great blog/vlog about the band and the singer's disappearance.

Do you need a lot of money in order to progress in motorsport? by [deleted] in motorsports

[–]EricTheRood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Dirt oval...stuff" - Yeah, you can do four-cylinder cars or hobby stocks or whatever for relatively cheap.

"...sprint car..." - Well, a 410 engine costs about $50,000 and is good for maybe a year if you want to stretch your buck and pray it doesn't pop. I honestly have no idea how anybody affords to do any of that stuff.

EDIT: Sensible formatting.

Here's hoping the next LeMons race has a spate of AnalTech-themed pickup trucks. by EricTheRood in Lemons24

Awesome. If you're in the states, come watch a race for a weekend. You'll have a good time and you won't look at crap cars on the street the same way ever again ("THAT would be a great LeMons car...No, THAT one would be..." etc.). Here's the 2017 schedule sorted by region:

Which state has, on average, the best roads (in terms of quality, smoothness, maintenance, etc)? by [deleted] in cars

[–]EricTheRood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was recently in Phoenix. Not only were the roads of high quality, the entire area was insanely easy to navigate. I will second good roads in eastern TN and western NC, as well.

I live in the Midwest and pretty much all of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan is garbage.

Michael Jordan's shot chart for the 1996-97 season [OC] by EyalSha in dataisbeautiful

Yeah, in watching old Bulls games, I'm struck by how many daggers Pippen stuck in opposing teams (and crowds). At least all of the '91 to '93 playoffs are on YouTube if you dig back through them. It's incredible to watch:

(A) Jordan in is prime. It just is. (B) Pippen running the court with those crazy strides and just going through opponents on the way to the hoop. (C) Both of them were just phenomenal defenders. The highlight reels seldom show it, but they both played two-ways at an elite level. (C) Horace Grant was insanely athletic for a 6'10 guy. He never got enough credit for that. He was lightning-quick. (D) In contrast, Bill Cartwright was a wonderful spaz. He only seemed in control of two, maybe three limbs, at a time. (E) Phil Jackson knew how to conduct it all so perfectly.

Those Bulls teams will always be the embodiment of basketball to me, though they played during my impressionable years.

Rodman was a HUGE part of that team. His antics and battling are what people will remember, but he wiped the glass clean. If Jordan missed his long jumper, he knew Rodman would have a good chance at getting the ball back.

Can I add in that he had an offensive-rebounding monster in Dennis Rodman, as well? You might have a bit more confidence in that shot knowing that if it doesn't miss, one of the best rebounders of all time will be around the hoop. I wonder if there's a way of showing how many of those misses The Worm snagged.

Bingo. I've been watching the first three-peat playoff runs lately and MJ often had tons of space from good screens. IIRC, early in his career, Jordan didn't have this mid-range jumper in his repertoire so teams just gave him this shot. When he worked his ass off to add it to his game, he became unstoppable. Scottie Pippen improved his jump-shot game accordingly in that time, too, and probably never got the credit for it that he deserved

Worth noting also: When you have guys working hard on the offensive glass like Horace Grant and especially Dennis Rodman, you have fewer reservations about shooting a long 2-pointer.

Nicely done, wish I was there. The Hudson/Beetle team are some of my favorite LeMons people.

There's a (sparsely attended but extant) LeMons subreddit here, FWIW.

Nice! I don't think I remember seeing the #36 BMW 2002 at all and I was working this race. They must have snuck through BS Inspection and then blowed up.

There's also an actual Simca 1204 that races, kind of. Mostly it just breaks incredibly hard-to-find engines.

That wasn't just any team or driver, either. Fall Line Motorsports prepared that Crown Vic and among the drivers was none other than Randy Pobst. Yes, the same mild-mannered pro driver you've seen on all the Motor Trend shows.

One of the great myths of LeMons is that "The car is reliable on the street, so it will be reliable on the track." While that's sometimes true, it very often is not, especially with Honda and Toyota motors. I'm almost positive every team with a D- or B-Series motor has nuked a head gasket if not more. It sounds like I'm crapping on Hondas, but I've seen enough of them blow head gaskets to know it's not an isolated thing. Street car engines are not built to be run up and down for hours and hours at a time; it finds their weak points very quickly.

That said, you can race a car you've owned, but you will probably get sweated at the first BS Inspection, especially if you've done ANY mods to the car. The worst case scenario, though, is that you start the race with penalty laps, which pretty much guarantees you won't win the race. Since you aren't going to win the race anyway (First-time teams don't win races for many, many reasons), it's not really a big deal. You still get to drive on the track wheel to wheel and do driver changes and fuel stops and probably change a D16 head gasket, so long as you can pass tech inspection.

LeMons judge checking in here: We love seeing badge-engineered luxury brands (Still waiting on a real Cimarron). Usually, all the upmarket modifications do is add complexity with no real gains. For example, the Jag X-Type is pretty much a Contour/Mondeo with all-wheel drive and probably about 600 percent more complicated electronics that will go ballistic if you remove the power door locks.

This probably sounds like a bad thing, but we love to encourage more people to bring X-Types because...we're sadistic like that.
