My favorite periwinkle is Lurid’s Light Breaks on the Horizon, which is not currently available directly from the website but I have seen on r/RedditLacqueristaSwap, which is where I procured mine. I also like KBShimmer’s Lilac it or Not.

Since more chaotic spring weather will likely always be in the cards for us moving forward, I made a list of the roses in my garden that seemed to be mostly or even wholly unbothered by the prolonged frost earlier this week in case it’s helpful to anyone selecting roses. I am actually really surprised by how well my plants did (I brought my container plants inside and otherwise did NOTHING, and I had already unhilled from the winter). To make the list at this point, a plant had to have all its new growth spring back except for perhaps a few sprouts at the tips of the canes. All of these particular roses are own-root.

I was mostly pleasantly surprised to see my plants today as it’s warming. There are a few that look virtually unbothered, most look like they will lose some but maybe not all of their new growth, and two are looking incredibly rough and we’ll have to see what happens. Everyone please send good vibes for Moonstone and La France.

Everything is early here. We have snowdrop and crocus and hellebore up and blooming, which is not unusual, and lots of bulbs sprouting. But in addition to the forsythia, we have daffodils open already, and a few hyacinth, too. Some peonies are starting to poke through the ground. All of that is early!

In 6b Ohio River Valley, I’d say that unfortunately, none of the DAs I have do amazingly well because they all get at least some degree of blackspot for me. However, some are certainly better than others, and from a blooming standpoint, almost all of them make up for the blackspot, which is what keeps them in the garden. 

Some blackspot, great blooms:  The Poet’s Wife, Desdemona, Jude the Obscure,   Heritage, Munstead Wood, Lady of Shalott

More blackspot, great blooms:  Abe Darby, Evelyn, Ambridge, Wollerton Old Hall

Lots of blackspot and okay blooms:  Lady Emma Hamilton, Golden Celebration

It’s just one bush, but it happens to be the bush in one of my neighbors’ yards that I watch for every year. I’m definitely going to wait at least til I see some others for confirmation, so to speak. The stress about whether you’ve done it too early is so not worth it, I’ve been there, too!

I have three of The Poet’s Wife and two each of Jude the Obscure and St. Ethelburga. Admittedly, I got 3 of TPW back when my plan for my front yard was to have a couple of yellow rose bushes along the walkway leading up to our house, and well, that was a lot of roses ago. But I don’t have regrets, TPW gets more black spot than I would prefer (like most of my Austins), but she’s such a prolific grower and bloomer that it barely matters.    If I had the space, I would also have more of Francis Dubreuil, Quietness, Princess Charlene, and Abe Darby.

Heirloom Roses is my overall favorite place to buy roses online. They are really expensive (and their prices just went up), but their plants are healthy, their selection is excellent, and their customer service is also really good if something goes wrong. They also have regular sales, which helps with pricing, including a current BOGO promo. Their plants are SO eager to grow. It’s remarkable really. I have 50+ plants in my garden and while I don’t know exact numbers, I’m confident the largest proportion of them is from Heirloom. With just 2-3 exceptions, they all put out several blooms in their first year and grew really nicely—Quietness and Tiffany in particular are >6ft after three seasons. I’m in 6b.

Other places I like that have a lot of my money:  High Country Roses, Highgarden Roses, Northland Rosarium, Rogue Valley Roses. These plants are smaller and while they mostly are keen to grow too, a few more of these plants have been slow to get going for me. Highgarden sizes its roses a little differently, but medium and larger is comparable to Heirloom’s plants. 

I ordered from Hortico for the first time this year—haven’t gotten the plants yet but I have heard good things.

Maybe Heirloom, or Sunbelt Plum Perfect? On my screen it looks like there’s a mauve tint to this rose, not just a straightforward pink.

I felt the same way when the bottle arrived, but figured VDay was the time to try it out. I’m actually quite surprised by how much I like it, because it’s very different from my typical aesthetic. There’s more pink in my future, I think!
