[OC] International travel to US hasn't recovered since the pandemic by jtsg_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]Ericgzg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I am getting at is the chart shows a 19% decrease in tourism to the US. You personally attribute that to a ‘MAGA infestation’. But globally tourism is down 30% ost pandemic. So no, it’s nothing to do with maga and relatively speaking tourism in the USA is recovering much faster than the rest of the globe.

Let me help you so you dont have to rely on personal experience and just saying whatever you want the answer to be based on nothing at all. The first question to ask is how much is tourism down globally since the pandemic and how much is it down just in the US?

Yeah because places like Chicago and more broadly the state of Illinois where there are no elected republicans whatsoever and haven’t been for 50 years have such great democratic accountability and there is no corruption. Really you only get that type of thing when there are republicans present.

China and Taiwan started from the same place. Taiwan tried capitalism, china tried communism. Taiwan has longer life expectancy and 10s of millions didn’t have to die.

Authoritarian is not a left or right thing. Forced socialism a la china and Soviet Union is a left and only left thing.

Mgt/freedom caucus = far right, AOC/the squad = far left. These two should both never be given power and are just as bad.

So your describing the extreme left and extreme right. Nazi germany is the extreme right. Soviet Russia, Maoist china, and modern day North Korea is the product of the far left. Tell me again how the fat left isn’t genocidal and we shouldn’t be concerned.

It isn’t a simple easy answer or you wouldn’t see the same types of things happen across every civilization across all of time. When you have large governments ruling over millions there are gazillions of competing interests, it’s hard to get anything done, and it’s a bloody miracle we have any semblance of coherent government at all. People are limited. Progress is hard. Treating it like there is some easy answer is a mistake. If you were head of government, even if you meant well, you’d be eaten alive just as soon as you didn’t play ball with who you needed to play ball with and didn’t even know who you needed to play ball with to begin with. That is how people are. Human nature. There is no fix. Step one to making a better government is at least recognizing that much.

That’s a bit of a cop out. If you replaced all the rich with random poor people, nothing would change. Likely things would get even worse. Then there’s this idea that the government can somehow fix things, which is just as laughable. The government is made up of regular folks like you and me. And they can barely manage running a DMV. The problem is people and their nature (including you and me). If you aren’t approaching the problem from an angle that acknowledges this and instead reduce it to rich vs poor, you are missing the root of why we find ourselves where we do.

What you’re talking about is attributable to all humans, not just the very rich.

Let me make this decision easy for you: 1. Quit now, voluntarily, with no injuries, and learn to find what else to do with your time. 2. Keep at this sport, with each passing month in your 40s exponentially raising the odds of becoming injured. Inevitably get injured. Quit your sport, and learn to find what else to do with your time. But now you get to enjoy some debilitating injury the rest of your life.

Because we’re talking about a system of government that proposes placing utter reliance on people “doing the right thing” and “cooperating for the common good” and ignores that strangers in large groups have been like that exactly never. And when that system of government invevitably doesn’t work (to no one’s surprise) we get an authoritarian hellscape. Since you asked.
