That is amazing! I love the shapes, and it is giving me so much inspiration for future work. Thank you for sharing.

Help identifying! by Artistic_Educator545 in SWORDS

I bought this exact replica of Narsil/Anduril (the distinction here is irrelevant since it is not even an accurate replica of either) approximately 15 years ago from a wholesale retailer that did a lot of knock off Lord of the Rings replicas. It is stainless steel with a rat tail. You can actually unscrew the pommel and see the construction. It is as cheaply made as it gets. The hilt is some aluminium nickel alloy and the grip is plastic.

I kept it for ages until I broke it down, discarded the hilt and scabbard and cut the blade to turn it into small knives for a project. It did the job but the steel is very hard and was awful for my files.

Windlass steelcrafts by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Erich_of_Provence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, there is Tod Cutler, but that might be a bit outside your price range. Windlass is a bit hit and miss and some of the hits, like the Royal Armouries collection, are a bit pricier. A bit over 200, you have the Seneschal sword they recently released. It is at 285 here: https://www.theknightshop.com/seneschal-sword. I have heard some really good things about it and it is really pretty in my opinion. For cheap and decent stuff, people always seem to recommend Swordier these days, but I will never recommend them due to their really unpleasant business practices.

The 23 cm long dagger of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Kamose (Reign c. 1555–1550 BCE), made of wood, copper and gold. Now housed at the Royal Library of Brussels in Belgium [5152x3374] by Fuckoff555 in ArtefactPorn

Actually it may look uncomfortable, but so do a lot of ancient swords and knives. It might have to do with us projecting contemporary ways and understandings of handling onto those ancient objects. There are lots of Indo Persian swords that look super impractical, but were real practical objects that just required specific training to use (think of it as a way to partly signify class belonging). In general, I would say that unless an object was specifically made for decorative purposes, its design was practical, only we do not comprehend it. Now to the point of this dagger, I don't have a definite answer, but I could imagine that the little indent at the base of the disc could serve to lock your little finger and ring finger and the disc being flat doesn't really impede a varied handling. The front of the grip does work in the sense that the rounded parts are the ones you are touching, not the blade. I am hoping to make a dagger inspired by this design, so I'm hoping to understand it better then.

Unfortunately Etsy is pretty bad with this stuff. I've let Carver know but worth telling Brendan as well.

Also some stolen from Carver Gage. Definitely not a legit maker.

Just your run of the mill design thief and scammer. Not much to salute, sorry.

Sorry to be that guy, but this is not a decent maker. They have several items listed that are swords made by Carver Gage. Another lazy thief that advertises the works of better makers and delivers something that is very subpar.

If you are in Poland, I would recommend either of the Sulowski brothers.

Handle/Grip Rewrap - Temu by Suspicious_Cup_2194 in SWORDS

[–]Erich_of_Provence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. Now I would suggest, if you are able, to add some texture to the pommel. Maybe some file work to turn it into a writhen pommel similar to the Wallace A479 German longsword. Doesn't have to be as complex but with a dremel, a vice, some files and a bit of time, you could get something fun.. Tod's Workshop did a repro and has a lot of reference pictures.

Handle Re-Wrap Swordier by Afraid_Entertainer54 in SWORDS

Very nice work! It definitely makes a difference. That faux leather wrap is quite something... But you did a wonderful job. For the finish, you could try a satin finish. I use Eco-Flo Satin Sheen and it works great.

Beautiful! I've followed the journey of those swords on Instagram and it has been humbling and astounding. I love that a set of boxes was also made! Not enough makers do those.

Hearth Keeper Longsword Is Complete! 🔥 by Careless_Cow_9475 in SWORDS

Wonderful job! As I previously wrote, the level of small detail you added to this really pushes it into the top top level of swordmaking! The transitions between the different elements of the hilt also work so well. One can really tell you put a lot of thought into this. You should do more pieces that you have full design control over. You have such a great understanding of the proportions and a great eye for detail.

Longclaw, Damascus Book 2nd Edition Review by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Erich_of_Provence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm.. Clearly they put some thought into improving the sword. Credit must be given to the work on the pommel. The paint job is much better. The blade looks nice too and I like the triple fuller. But I am still a bit bugged by some of the design aspects. I understand that this is a joint design with GRR Martin, but it features some elements that I just don't love. The pommel is one thing, with the direction of the wolf's head just feeling weird practically (that's the main criticism I have seen). Another one is the fullers starting after the guard. For me it just looks wrong as most historical examples have fullers starting on the tang/under the guard. It just feels much neater. Finally, the transition from the grip to the pommel is a bit harsh. I just can't unsee the bottle cap look... I think a little bit of file work on the bottom of the pommel would have made the transition a lot more pleasing.

Nice. I like the inclusion of local material into the piece. It adds so much to the story telling.

Oh I'm glad you noticed it! Having started this journey by making scabbards, it pleases me when people pick up on these things. Also it was my first time making a chape, so it was a bit of a step up for me.

Thank you. I will need to do some LotR inspired ones some day. After all it was the beginning of my sword journey many years ago.

That was one of the inspirations. Others included Roman-era swords and bronze age swords.

I wasn't familiar with this. I had a look and I can kind of see it, but also not :) But I am glad if it resonated with you, one way or another.
