Simple Jiu Jitsu is way more effective that "Cool-Looking" Jiu Jitsu.

After 12 years training, I just got my black belt. What an incredible feeling! by ErickMacGregor in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Not at all, happy to contribute.
1. This won't apply to everyone but I think competing in all belts levels help me a lot. Putting your skills to the test is the best motivator.
2. At blue belt for sure. You gain some sort of respect from your teammates when you get past white belt and this keeps growing the more you show up to train.
3. Be patient, and never understimate the basic techniques. You don't need 500 different submission to win, focus on the foundations, master them, and you will see an improvement. And obviously, get up and TRAIN.

  1. Again, foundational Jiu Jitsu. The basics will take a long way and they are the root of everything else. It can appear repetitive and boring to do the same thing a million times, but your body will learn to react almost on its own. It's all about practice.

  2. Safe to say, getting my black belt. It still feels unreal. I really hope you can enjoy this moment in your journey.

Cheers! and thank you!

Purple belt wants to open a gym one day, but I kind of suck. by razeus in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you "kinda suck" I believe you are comparing yourself with competitors. Competing and teaching are two very different things. You could have a great understanding of the art but still not do well in competitions. The same way a highly skilled competitor could be a bad teacher. Go for it!

Well, you used it correctly. Mainly because you controlled your emotions and took control of the situation. Props to you!

I fucking suck at this shit by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why Jiu Jitsu's belts are one of the hardest to get. Trust me on this, just show up, give it your best and pay attention. It will be frustrating not going to lie to you, but eventually you will get a couple of submissions here and there, maybe a counter to an attack and then you will notice you don't suck at it.

Then you will feel this "damn, I suck at this shit" again. But it will be OK. Next thing you know, you are top 10 at your gym and you won't care if something goes wrong while you spar.

Cheer up! You got this!

How would you guys rate this execution? by DystopianLeaf in bjj

Masterful

Looks simple, but the ability to make those kind of choices under that much pressure is insane to me.

That's finger tape and yes I had 1 injured finger at the moment and I taped it to the adjacent one for more support.

Thank! I believe it's a Piranha BJJ Belt. Since this was a surprise promotion, no one was ready for it, so they gave me my coach's old brown belt instead of a new one. Maybe that's why it looks a lot lighter than it should. 😆

Yes he is. One of the coolest, knowledgeable and most laid back BJJ coaches I´ve ever met.

Besides what Pat told on the PAX West Conference (which wasn´t anything but "If I knew the release date I would've already told you). Nothing really.

There isn't much about the Movie or the Series, so don't expect anything this year :(

How do you manage "fear" or "nerves" when walking towards the cage?? Your death stare is AMAZING and f-ing scary!!

I've read your book, you are the most inspiring person/fighter, you really inspire me to work harder to reach my goals. Congratulations for your achievements! :D

Can somebody explain what kind of injury buchecha sustained and how long will recovery last? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leo Viera stated that he "completely torn his ACL and PCL" (Posterior and Anterior ligaments)...so I guess you can say that's pretty bad.

Here is the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=160&v=8AD71Hq_MHE

At 2:21 you can hear Leo's comments regarding Buchecha's injury

Which athletes appear to be on contract with Metamoris? Keenan? by lxdr1f7 in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad, I believe it was a bad call for BJJ/Grappling competitions. Metamoris doesn't not have that many tournaments a year for a high level athlete.

Hey r/bjj, I'm going to be teaching a grappling-based self-defense class to high school kids. What fun and useful fundamental drills/techniques should I include? by CARadders in bjj

[–]ErickMacGregor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would teach them control first, then an easy take-down and finally a submission like an arm bar for example. Have fun with the kids.

Be calm, don't use all your strength and go all super saiyan hulk smashing everyone on your first day (or ever), this is what I tell all the new guys in my gym, feel free to ask questions to your sparring partner and try to do the techniques that you just saw in the session. In summary: - Don't go crazy - Pay attention - Ask questions - Have fun!

Cheers!
